PLEDGE – Pledge Language is English Declaration and Government Endorsement – Act of 2008

Georgia Republican Congressman Paul Broun will win reelection in November. In April he introduced a bill to prohibit the sale of pornography on military bases. He followed that up in May with a constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage. Then last month he fought off his primary challenger by questioning his religious convictions. (His opponent was an active Christian who, among other church duties, served as chairman of the board of deacons.)

That’s how you win in Georgia’s 10th Congressional District, among the most conservative in the state. That and this:

Rep. Paul Broun, R-Athens, has proposed legislation to withhold federal funds from any school that lets students sing The Star-Spangled Banner or say the Pledge of Allegiance in a language other than English.

He introduced the PLEDGE – Pledge Language is English Declaration and Government Endorsement – Act of 2008 on Friday. Requiring immigrant students to say the pledge and sing the national anthem in English will help them assimilate, Broun said. [...]

Schools in New Mexico, Arizona and Wisconsin allow and sometimes require students to recite the pledge in Spanish or another language, according to ProEnglish, a Virginia-based nonprofit that pushes English as the official language of the U.S.

RELATED: All of the seven Republicans representing Georgia in Congress voted against the education bill passed last week by overwhelming bipartisan majorities in both the House and Senate.

Que es la facinacion con ingles? Que diferencia lo hace hace? Un idioma segundo es bueno. No problema.

I'm glad Broun is pushing this critical issue. It's a little known fact but in a poll, the students in each school who allowed a child to speak in another language loved their country 9% less than an English-only school (Silly & Bogus, 2007). In fact with a multiple regression analysis, you can find a direct correlation between the number of foreign words spoken and the desire to burn the flag (Ran, Dom, & Crap, 2008).

By the way, I haven't checked it, but don't Hispanics have one of the highest rates of service in the American Armed Forces of any ethnicity?

yeah, and some of those Hispanics aren't even naturalized- meaning when they die they get to be shipped back to their home country for burial rather than having the honor of being interred in the country they served. English is the "lingua franca"that's a given-and in many other countries it is taught as mandatory-it's only in our country that we refuse, or make a token attempt to learn other languages. I work in a city where I hear at least five languages on any given day, yet the street signs are in English, the subway maps, the restaurant menus( unless it's specifically a type of haute cuisine)...this backwater bigotry is completely stupid. Georgia fails the citizenship test. Wonder how many people there could actually pass it...

"English Only" certainly is laudable ("Que es la facinacion con ingles?" There is no fascination or obscession. It simply is the language of this country -- as well as replacing French as the World Language, which should make it more, rather than less, attractive to learn here as well as elsewhere.). The radical rejection of assimilation is so bad that even New Deal dinosaurs like Arthur Schlesinger, Jr., have been moved to complain ("The Disuniting of America"). What this guy wants is a gimmick.

Now the Dems have a problem of being pro-illegal-immigration (San Francisco's major is a criminal extremist with his "Sanctuary" movement, similar to that of the scum who simply wanted to make a statement, sometimes Religious Left-style "liberation theology" kind of statement, here in the USA, similar to the "Freeze" people -- they just hated Reagan and this was the kind of destructive, illegal tantrum they threw).

Here's a challenge for the Dems, if they are patriotic (Dems, next to the US flag? Do they pledge allegiance? ha ha). Rather than whimper about illegal immigrants' rights, why don't they apply their beloved benefit and entitlement machine in a positive way offering at least English as a Second Language ("ESL") classes as part of the Democratic Party platform this year. It's more useful than midnight basketball [rolling eyes].

Don't whine or wail about this guy and his district. Be more grown up and realize that just as with play-pen radical "cancer sites" in this country that view the Dems as moderate or centrist at best, and frequently conservative (the "corporate media" types), you'll have situations like this in Georgia, or on the Great Plains -- where, incidentally, Obama is engaged in outreach. You have dry counties still in Georgia, don't forget. It's just that kind of place. Where is Obama's outreach?

"Georgia fails the citizenship test. Wonder how many people there could actually pass it..."

You're engaging in slander and should be ashamed. Much of Georgia is nice and I preferred being outside Atlanta when I lived there (used it as a base to get away from there and all over the real South for a year or two). However, it might be good to require that citizenship test as a screening device to qualify for the suffrage (and even use the test results to weight one's vote if there is a minimum well below a perfect score).
