That's how poor working class Americans elected Bush, and some still believe his pseudo economics in spite of the evidnece in their own pocketbooks.

Do you really believe that the GOP cares about the poor? They care about their constituents. The GOP cares about those who vote them in office. Just as the democrats care about those that vote them in office.

However have you ever wondered why the democrats agree to tax cuts for the RICH? Might it be because they ARE ALL MILLIONAIRES. But hey they love the poor and are going to cure their ailments if they can.

Right. Delusions? Not I but perhaps you guys or gals.

The democrats dont care about the poor. They just use them to get elected. If you have problems with poverty you should really look at the party who is dedicated to irradicating poverty instead of at the party whose goal is to provide jobs and a consumer driven free market system that benefits almost all.

You direct your wrath at the wrong party Runasim. Why you and yours continue to rail against the GOP for not giving you more food stamps is beyond me.

I will only say again. LBJ embarked upon unfettered social programs to banish poverty and what happened?

The democrats continue to believe that there is nirvana if they just had the right amount of money. The problem is that if you solve the poors problems what happens to them?

They become Republicans. Man wants to be upwardly mobile. The Democrats do not want that. Thus it is they who are equally at fault for keeping them in their poor economic chains.

Secondly if you must embark upon a college thesis to out line why Capitalism vs Socialism is not relevant in this circumstance then you have lost about 90 percent of the people who you would try to convince, because you know what?

They don't care. Only You care. You and your textbook definitions of social theory does not get policies in place to turn the poor into productive Republicans.

"I believe your view of "capitalism" is nothing more than Neo-feudalism, and I assume that those of you so enamored of it expect to be the "princelings" of America and not its huddled masses."

That's exactly it.
Socialism versus Capitalism

How neatly you summarize a choice that is not before us. Where has socialism worked? Who cares? Where has unfettered capitalism worked? Who knows? But the countries in which it has been tried have very well demonstrated the effects of so-called "free market" capitalism. Indonesia, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, South Africa, Korea, China, Russia, Iran, Bolivia and others. All received economic "makeovers" according to the prescriptions of the very "free-market" gurus worshiped by the neocon right: Milton Friedman, Ronald Reagan, Margret Thatcher and the so-called "Chicago boys" of the Chicago School of Economics. The result has been consistent. Massive increases in poverty with the removal of the social safety net, and massive increases of wealth for those at the top.

This is the universal and unwavering result from a shift of public resources into private hands and the transfer of private debt to the public. We have seen this in the last eight years in this country: privatization of war making and disaster relief has enriched cronies of the GOP including Halliburton, Blackwater, Bechtel and the other 20,000 contractors who are nursing at the public teat. Now the bad economic policies of the GOP has hammered our economy and the dollar, and we are acquiring the private debt through bailouts. That's the GOP "free-market" plan.

It's especially interesting that you raised China as an example. After Tiananmen Square, "free-market" policies made billionaires of the former Communist leaders, who are currently 90% of Chinese billionaires. They're called the "princelings." For Chinese workers, it is the embodiment of the conservative economic dream: no unions, no time off, no job security and no minimum wage. They work for slave wages at dangerous jobs to support the "princelings." Environmental regulations? Zero, just what the neocons want for America. Yes, China is a perfect example of what the neocons want for America: most of us living in abject poverty while the powerful and moneyed few wallow in wealth.

As for the claims being made here about what would happen under "socialist" Obama? It all sounds so familiar. During Clinton's presidency, Newt Gingrich and Dick Armey made exactly the same predictions: that Clinton's economic policies would massively increase unemployment, deficit and debt. They were totally, completely and absolutely WRONG. No, it has been the Republican "free market" reforms that have decimated jobs, ballooned the federal budget, destroyed the American dollar and compromised the future of our children.

I believe your view of "capitalism" is nothing more than Neo-feudalism, and I assume that those of you so enamored of it expect to be the "princelings" of America and not its huddled masses.

"I get how you could not like liberal policies, but I don't have a remote understanding of how you can support policies and people that have done this much damage to the country."

If you read and understood what some of us have written, you would notice that we're critical of Bush. It doesn't follow from legitimate, sensible criticism of liberal excesses that have failed in the past, that those of us doing that must necessarily be pro-Republican (you definitely have not been reading what I post) or pro-Bush.

Neocon, excellent diagnosis of the fatal illness with which the Dems are infecting the American way of life.

Socialism, even the benevolent EU-nuch variety, has never worked except in countries of less than 10 million people with a strong work ethic [Scandanavia]. I laughed when Ted Koppel was told by a PRC businessman that China is the most capitalist country in the world---and one might notice that millions of jobs are being created each year in the PRC.

You're right. Read "The Forgotten Man" by Amity Schlaes & see how the Dems went off the rails in the thirties. All the usual narrative is largely agitprop about recent American history, and now we are being told that Obama will fix it.

"Change" isn't always good & the EU-nuchs like Obama because he will destroy American paramountcy in the world economy [still 27% of the planet's GNP according to The Economist]

Happy[ ]Surge. Get your facts correct next time. Thanks in advance. Shaun is an incessent Bush-basher and blatant Obama campaigner and McCain copycat basher.

This is an anti-GOP year and everyone who is awake and aware knows it.

Ted Stevens (senior GOP Senator) has been indicted on federal corruption charges. Don Young is also under investigation. At least one Senate seat (for Alaska) may end up going Democratic this year, to add to the GOP carnage.

So now its simply down to two things.........A moderate McCain who does not really have much support from the GOP or a Socialist Obama who has the full weight and support of the Democratic machine behind his back waiting for their turn in the cookie jar.

The choice is becoming more and more easy to make. Socialism or Capitalism.

The Democrats have had decades to fix the poor. They have NOT........WHY? Because if YOU FIX IT THEY DONT NEED YOU ANYMORE.

Haven't you guys figured this out yet? They are not going to fix the poor. They will get in office and then pretend to try and blame it on the GOP and then after 8 years they will be back on the streets and then convince everyone that because the poor are still poor that its the GOP's fault.

The difference is that the GOP does not pander to the poor. They pander to the rich and corporations which give jobs and healthcare. They make no bones about it. They want free enterprise to give jobs and healthcare.

The GOP takes care of their constituents............The Democrats DO NOT. They just complain and whine and bellyache and then get thrown out because they know fixing the poor is putting them out of a job.

The democrats scream foul and demand welfare for all. Yet then when given the chance............they dont do it. They fail.

Simply because fixing the poor would put them out of a job.

And just Think how close this election is with McCain bumbling around as you put it. Wait till the RNC gets energized and gets behind him and gets it rolling and nothing energizes the left more then a far left candidate unveiling once again "socialist America programs" like Obama just did.

You know, a lot of times, I read the posts here, and I think 'well, this is gonna get hit with bias', and with Shaun, we always know where he stands. The thing is, he has the benefit of being correct on the facts. When I see the posters respond to this, particularly neocon and superdestroyer and DLS in a way that I could write up on their behalf, I can't help but think they might be trolls. Because, I can't imagine that anyone can look at America now and see the failures of the Bush administration as just a mass media creation. Our country, its dollar, its military, and a lot of its future has been destroyed by this President, and his policies, and John McCain wants to further those policies.

The only hope with John McCain was that while he agreed with these policies, he might be more competent at carrying them out. That's it. That's damage control, essentially. What I'm asking is, if you're not trolls, how can you deal with supporting and being apologists for the people and policies that have spent, and will continue to spend, years destroying our country in their actions. I mean, I just can't imagine having a Democratic President who put their principles and plans in place, and it all collapsed, and the country was clearly rotting out from itself because of it, and me going 'no, no, see, this is why this guy is awesome!' And that's essentially what you're doing. I don't understand it.

So, I'm honestly asking: are you guys just trolls or do you mean it? And if you mean it, where have you been living? I live in a town that is disproportionately Republican because it's got more elderly middle class whites than most. But it's been a long time since I've seen anyone say how great this country is doing, or how we're headed to the right place or how easy it is to heat their homes, or get to and from work, or live their lives with the gambit thrown on them.

I just don't understand it. I get how you could not like liberal policies, but I don't have a remote understanding of how you can support policies and people that have done this much damage to the country. I mean, when you look at your fellow citizens, don't you see any pain in them, aren't you shaken at all by it? I don't understand, unless you spent your life with blinders on, how you could think the way you do, and support the policies you support in the face of such clear and absolute failure.

SD, "The only groups that will benefit from the Michelle Obama must be obeyed program are ..."

Wow, going after the wife already there SD? You must be getting desperate. Your doom-and-gloom for the republican party predictions are getting as old as Sil's.

McCain has slowly slid from the maverick into just another republican clone by reversing himself on multiple issues. He's backtracked on so many issues including running a clean campaign with his new attitude of character assassination ads that I'm finding it hard to trust what he says.

Would he be as bad as Bush? Probably not, but he seems headed in that direction.

I'm not saying he can't win, this looks to be another tight election.

McCain used to be someone I respected, even though I disagreed more than agreed with him.
Already in his debates with Romney, he showed signs of hitting below the belt, but this is something new altogether.

The worst of it is that I suspect this is the real Mccain coming out, giving a preview of what a Pres. McCain would be.
It's a big disappointment and a big turn-off.

* According to our best information, 40 government officials were indicted or convicted in the wake of Watergate. There was a total of 31 Reagan era convictions, including 14 because of Iran-Contra and 16 in the Department of Housing & Urban Development scandal. 47 individuals and businesses associated with the Clinton machine were convicted of or pleaded guilty to crimes with 33 of these occurring during the Clinton administration itself. There were in addition 61 indictments or misdemeanor charges. 14 persons were imprisoned. A key difference between the Clinton story and earlier ones was the number of criminals with whom he was associated before entering the White House.

- Number of individuals and businesses associated with the Clinton machine who have been convicted of or pleaded guilty to crimes: 47 - Number of these convictions during Clinton's presidency: 33 - Number of indictments/misdemeanor charges: 61 - Number of congressional witnesses who have pleaded the Fifth Amendment, fled the country to avoid testifying, or (in the case of foreign witnesses) refused to be interviewed: 122

It was no differernt the predeeding 8 years under Clinton then during this 8 years under Bush. This time however we are going to elect an American or a German endorsed Socialist.

The choice is ours.
Pattonguy, he would not be like Bush, but, McCain is disturbing in many ways.
He use to be acceptable to democrats way back when but, after his makeover this election, he is like Bush in one important way: He is showing himself to be incompetent.

I'm very disappointed at how McCain has changed. In the first Republican debate, I thought he was a refreshing change from all of those other white guys up on the stage. But once he clinched the nomination, he started cozying up to the conservatives, and his whole "maverick" image started ringing a little hollow. Admittedly, despite what some Democrats are saying, a McCain administration wouldn't be the third term of Georgie Boy, but I'm disturbed by how much he's changed from earlier in the election.

the one thing that has hurt McCain the most is his abandoning of his 2000 self as a maverick who is ready to buck the establishment for what is right.
He is so desperate to be president and his personal dislike of Obama is apparent. But, he is letting these and his temper control him and his campaign.
On the other hand, Obama has an excellent and disciplined campaign staff and Obama is running a smart and effective campaign.
You may not be convinced but, you look at the way the two candidates run their campaigns and you see what kind of presidents they will be and how their white house would be run.
Frankly, Obama is a very impressive candidate.

Silhouette, why do you keep posting as if Senator Clinton is the presumptive nominee, and not Senator Obama? Do you honestly think that delegates committed to him will switch at the convention?

One thing people conveniently keep forgetting is that McCain isn't some lonely entity acting randomly this way and that...seemingly looking weak. McCain has BigOil strategists working with him 24/7.

The german restaurant while Obama was in Germany was no misstep, it was planned. It was planned. Think about why sharp and "we will not lose" BigOil strategists would PLAN a misstep?

When you plug in the Obama trap and the pitfall they have waiting for him just after the convention, ensuring that he looks electable next to McCain is a MUST.

Clinton is a wildcard BigOil will not tolerate. They know precisely what another Clinton administration will mean. With what they have on Obama, he'll never make it to the Oval Office. They know full well that if the democrats nominate Hillary Clinton, her defeat against McCain (them) would be one of the largest landslides in US history.

BigOil is McCain and BigOil has been craftily carving politics since before most of you were born.

Misstep my hiney.
