"Yes, they are photo-ops and PR tours."

Aimed at home rather than at the people there, though. Obama had to go to Iraq to show support for the troops, as well as tell Americans he'll be sane about any withdrawal, not do an immediate surrender-flight as the lunatics and US-haters at home have demanded. He raises serious political-economic concerns, which will be more precisely defined once he brings people into his Cabinet and we see if the Dems in Congress react wrongly to any strong Dem vote this year and lunge too far leftward, but I'm confident that he on his own wouldn't do anything stupid.

??? It's bad enough that stupid people in New York were exploited by Hillary Clinton in the past, but how on earth can anyone today believe that this is a listening rather than an exposure tour? We who can be critical of Obama at least have our heads in the right place, unlike others.

Yes, they are photo-ops and PR tours.
There is no information about Iraq or Afghanistan "on the ground' that can't be had via e-mail, telephome, video conference calls and the like.

A minor side benifit is the personal contact, the introduction , the hand shake.
A biggger benifit would be talking to the troops without supervision by superiors, to boost morale and to hear their version of what 'on the ground ' means, as well as to relay information about what those 'on the ground' in areas other than their own are experiencing. 'On the ground' means diffferent things in different areas.

In the end, though, it is civilain command and the CIC who make policy decisions.and assigns missions, not he other way around. . The boots on the ground are there to execuete policy, not to determine what it should be.
McCain totally misunderstands that, and Bush uses it when it suits politics, not policy.

The traipsing overseas, safely protected by our troops in the Green Zones, for photo ops, is quite laughable. As close to really "putting your boots in the dirt" as it is going to Las Vegas. & McSame seems to be the one doing more of it. Wow, he's my pick, fer sure.
Too bad he couldn't set aside some time to actually attend one or two of the Committee meetings regarding Afghanistan.

The more I read about Obama, the more convinced I am he is a total fraud! He has spent his entire career in preparation for being elected President, without regard to the office itself, but just to satisfy his enormous ego! From taking credit for Emil Jones legislation to plump up his skeletal resume, to hiring 300 foreign policy advisers to prepare his talking points on a daily basis. They even provide him with possible questions and appropriate answers! Can this man even think for himself? Whose decisions will he be making if he gets elected POTUS? Whose puppet is he? Unfortunately, I don’t believe he cares about America or Americans. He is just in it to feed his already over-inflated ego. No experience, no qualifications, NOBAMA.
