Obama’s Letters from Home

Having been raised in New York I’m familiar with the way politicians coming out of some big city environments can have a few skeletons in their closet, either large or small. But when you run for President, it seems that every last bone will eventually come sliding out onto the dinner table. (Which can really ruin the appeal of your centerpiece, according to Martha.) It seems the same holds true for Chicago, so Senator Obama is probably getting tired of seeing things like this getting dug up by Jim Geraghty at The Campaign Spot. It seems that a number of Barack Obama’s records as an Illinois State Senator from 1997 to 2000 are “not available.”

There’s a shock.

His state legislative office records may have been thrown out, he told us.

He’s never released a specific list of law clients, instead giving a list of all of his firm’s clients, numbering several hundred each year. His campaign will only confirm representation when the media comes to them with a specific case.

He won’t release his application to the state bar.

Once again, there could be perfectly innocent explanations for all of these things, though one wonders if public officials generally don’t keep more specific records. But I will agree with Geraghty on at least one question:

Does it bother anyone that a guy with political ambitions for his entire adult life has not left a paper trail?

I understand that supporters of his opponent will look for any scrap which can be brought to bear. Seriously… I get it. And I disagree with the perception that Obama has left no paper trail. But the amount of time that Senator Obama has had to invest scrambling for old records, delaying the release of others which turn out to be perfectly mundane in appearance, or simply losing things certainly isn’t helping the general impression. He also apparently doesn’t have any of his correspondence with his constituents from that period according to the link above. Obama has been an up and coming politician for quite a while. For this new era, as we leave behind the “politics as usual,” accountability would seem like a no-brainer. Was this sloppy record keeping, or is there really an October surprise waiting in the wings? Stay tuned.

I'd have to know more about what sorts of records are usually kept for both attorneys and state senators before assessing anything. After all, it's not like Obama's the first lawyer to go to Washington. What's normal?

The office records likely won't hurt him....the office manager can be scapegoated for that one.

Not releasing the bar application?? There's a juicy innuendo to fester. I smell a George Bush air national guard higher -up connections story.

Can't remember his own clients?? I can remember mine from 1974.

Well, I suppose there could possibly be some fire somewhere deep in this made up smoke. However, quoting an "update" on "texasdarlin's" "blog" (and really, she could be the only "blogger" (sic) with even less credibility than Larry "Whitey tape" Johnson on the entire intertubes) claiming he refused to release his Bar application doesn't count as fire, or even second-hand smoke for that matter. There's no citation, and a little Googling on my part - News and Web - turned up nothing on the subject at all. Throw in blogs, and the only references are (spoiler alert!) texasdarlin's site, Larry Johnson's No iQ, and various trackbacks to them - including yours here. (Pretty good though, for a post well over a month old!)

Jazz, I could go on, further critiquing the sources you mention, their credibility, and their agendas (again from the same post by our favorite li'l darlin': "No release of a birth certificate." Well, um... yes, he did.) but this is a comment section, not a write-my-own-blog section, so I won't as it would be lengthy. There could be "perfectly innocent explanations" for your Very Serious Concern about an Obama "October surprise" but the tone of your posts for some time now leads me to think that, nope, there probably aren't. The concern you profess, lets face it, begins with an "H."

    It ended with "lost."

So, it's supicious that his first grade report card hasn't been released?

Look. Obama has been the suspicious guy from the git go, for a year a half now. Everything that is known has been the subject of hypwerventilating allegatons, surmisals , imaginings and fabrications. All the time he has to waste in self-defense is time when he has been kept off message.

Does anyone really believe that any new scrap of information wouldn't undergo the same process of distortion? OMG, he shook hands with a Muslim in 1999!

If he wants to concentrate on the election, he really can't afford to waste time like this anymore. That's my guess for an explanation , anyway.
In his shoes, I would want to do the same. .

    There there?

Can't a few of his 300 foreign policy advisers do double duty as Obama document archivists?

He's definitely better than Howard Dean was.
