Wow Austin, someone's bitter today, eh?

You may want to think twice before trying to bash "the left" as being mindless Apple fanboys. Out of everyone I know who are Apple users, most lean to the conservative side and are also the most radical devotees of Apple.

I will also agree with you that Apple as NEVER been open in their architecture all the way back to the Apple II series.

Apple a "darling of the Left?" Whatever. My impression is that most of the types that scream the loudest about proprietary design/closed systems tend to the libertarian edge.

But it's true that Jobs and Co. have always been at least as proprietary as Microsoft, Oracle, etc. What kills me is each time they bring out the next greatest thing ever (which is usually just a hugely overpriced if only slightly improved version of what someone else is already making) the nuts once again line up, screaming "Please sir, may I have another!"

And Jobs is pleased to oblige.

The reaction is similar in so many ways to other things revolving around ideology, perceptions, and cult mentality.

Apple has always been the darling the left and the uber-geeks, and Steve Jobs has a messianic following. Gates, Balmer and Microsoft are always evil, predatory Simon Legrees, and Steve is the savior of the computer world.

The truth has always been that Steve (and Apple) believe only in closed, proprietary systems, under the complete and total control of Apple. Why would anyone expect the iPhone to be any different?
