your commentary's premise is way off base… the suggestion for McCain to visit Antarctica is not that silly, nor would it be hilarious as runasim believes, as McCain HAS BEEN TO ANTARCTICA!! I saw him there myself 3 years ago as I am a McMurdo worker; he was part of a congressional visit… obviously, it was not a photo op, since you yourself are ignorant of the visit…
Of course senators should be going anywhere the US taxpayer is footing a bill to see just what is being conducted there… McCain also went to the South Pole station that trip. After all most of our knowledge of global warming is coming from our science down there, so, in my mind, why shouldn't ANY presidential candidate pay a visit??? Haven't seen Barack down there yet… or Hilary for that matter. I did greet my own congresswoman down there, and she's never run for prez.

There is no need for Obama to go to South America. (To do what, talk to Chavez?)

Jazz is right. it is mostly photo-ops and publicity. In politics, however, a poltician has to be a politician.
i've been sending Obama ESP messages not to fall for McCain's baiting too much and to call McCain out on the value of these trips.
A picture of Obama on the Champs Elyses would look great , however, and I can't deny that.

i hope the Obama team reads this post and does send McCain to Antarctica.
The idea is hilarious!
