"I read in the news this morning that Bush needs to withdraw troops from Iraq to take care of his unfinished business in Afghanistan. Wouldn't it be deliciously ironic if by withdrawing the troops from Iraq Bush came to discover that they weren't needed there at all?"

The past two months, there have been more US deaths in Afghanistan than in Iraq. Relocating the troops to Afghanistan makes perfect sense and the worse situation in Afghanistan is the perfect pretext for President Obama, not only Bush, to get troops out of Iraq. (Having it happen sooner may aid the ailing GOP in the November elections.)

However, once the troops are moved, it is reasonable to assume the situation will get worse in Iraq, i.e., there indeed is a need for troops there. (In fact, there is a need for more troops there now, in Iraq. One of the main problems with the screwups in the occupation was wanting to do this cheaply as well as having both a conceited concept of "revolution in military affairs" push-button warfare that made ground operations less needed, and the assumption that the US would be welcomed in Iraq.)

Wouldn't it be deliciously ironic if by withdrawing the troops from Iraq Bush came to discover that they weren't needed there at all? That what the Iraqi citizens have been saying all along- that they want the US troops out- is the best way to go?

And in the meantime we're more or less back to square one in Afghanistan.....

All that wasted money, and years, and lives. All those reborn terrorists that have had years to study the US and determine where we are most vulnerable....

How I miss the Clinton years when Bill was wriggling around the definition of "is". Now we have an administration that has as many alternate realities as there are days in the year.

The point being that the GOP hasn't gotten their priorities straight in this... if they wanted to go after the terrorists they could have continued the fight in Afghanistan and we wouldn't be at this point..
