Keep on writing about Katrina. it was a disaster like no other/ and continues to be a siaster like no other.

The tale of fraud and waste reminds me so much of the fraud and waste In Iraq, it's enogh to cause a lot of hair tearing.

It isn't just FEMA.
It's a whole culture of operating via ontracts, without oversight or accountability.
Homeland Security, Defense Dept. you name it.

Double-check what you have read, because I said it's old news _outside the affected area_. And,

Yes, but other disasters can affect us where we live. I grew up in California and know all about earthquakes as well as mudslides after storms, and large forest fires and like to consume people's homes as well as trees. And it includes the flooding in Iowa where I was until the end of May, parts of which then became submerged under flood waters. Many ruined homes will be demolished, there are desperate hopes of generous buy-out programs for the people so affected, and in addition -- some FEMA trailers originally used in the Gulf Coast area after Hurricane Katrina have been moved to Iowa for use by the displaced persons.

Katrina is FAR from old news in the region affected. It is current news. I agree with the earlier post about Pass Christian. It is still devastated. But there is progress. Now instead of the cental part of town being 6 trailers, slabs, and broken houses, it is now 5 trailers, a shack for po-boys, slabs and broken houses. But don't lose sleep America, it doesn't affect you where you live. I lost my faith in this country during the first months after Katrina. I am going to have to start digging for my belief in this government and nation to get any lower. LOL!

Katrina may be 'old news.' But I intend to keep banging at the way of the theme every chance I get. At the center of the 'old news' are actual, suffering human beings.

One of my road trips one day out of Atlanta (a [long] day trip) was out to New Orleans, around Lake Ponchartrain, multiple runs on the causeway (out of sight of land in the middle), then to New Orleans itself and over the Long Bridge, then along the Gulf Coast all the way to Dauphin Island and Mobile before returning to Atlanta (it was sunset — perfect timing). A lot of that area was in the news at the time Katrina struck. I remember the casinos around Biloxi that I had driven by and the fake, poorly-proportioned pirate ship (if I recall, it had ridiculously small masts) that was, well, shipwrecked by the hurricane.

Just drive from Grosse Pointe communities to Alter Street, the first block in Detroit next to them along the lakeshore route. You see a war zone — buildings with boarded windows, buildings falling apart, buildings burned without ever being repaired … buildings gone completely from parcels of land…as if the place were bombarded (or destroyed in rioting in the 1960s) and never was rebuilt.

As for Katrina, come on — outside the Gulf Coast, it's old news and off the radar screen. Even the Bush haters are concentrating instead mainly on Iraq.

It isn't just NO, daveinboca. There are entire cities still gone (90%+) destroyed in Mississippi (my sister used to live in Pass Christian, Mississippi and it's still devastated).

But your point on NO's mayor isn't lost. That guy and his cronies typify UNCARING and INEFFECTUAL leadership.

The rest of the vast area affected by Katrina is rebuilding rapidly, but I notice no one mentions that the mayor of NO has stopped going to city council meetings. Perhaps the worst mayor ever, and this clown doesn't get one sentence of rebuke?
