Soooo, here are my thoughts on the matter, and I just saw the debate a few days ago. Did anyone else think it was the most tense moment in the debate - that moment when the topic of abortion came up in the larger realm of health care? What Obama seemed to say was that he disagrees with all late-term abortions, except in the case where the health of the mother is in danger. Though he did not say anything about mental health, it seemed to indicate that he still stands by this assertion. I think it's an important distinction, and he seemed to be as clear as any politician can be when discussing such a topic. I see Obama as a huge champion of health in general. I think what it ultimately comes down to is whether or not you think adequate health coverage is a moral imperative or if it's just another economic issue that we have to contend with. I think Ms. Barnes, writing in her column, makes a case that Obama clearly sees adequate health insurance and care as a moral imperative, especially for children.

It's a very sad for those peoples, who totally facing a challenge of mentally problem.Because they are also like us but their life is always full of painful. So guys we need to do some help and cooperate with them. There are more people in jails and prisons afflicted with mental health illness than in our mental hospitals.

dorkey
New Jersey Drug Treatment

Manchester -- perhaps we're not talking about the same thing? The votes to which I referred were in the IL senate. And he actually voted "present" on them. (See IL conventions if you've not encountered the "present" votes protocol)

Which bill did the president sign?

Well, the bill passed, our President signed it, and abortions continue. Obama's fears have shown themselves to be unfounded.

Manchester -- My understanding of Obama's vote on partial birth abortion was that the bill didn't contain the exception for a woman's health.

From "OnTheIssues.org":

In 1997, Obama voted against SB 230, which would have turned doctors into felons by banning so-called partial-birth abortion, & against a 2000 bill banning state funding. Although these bills included an exception to save the life of the mother, they didn't include anything about abortions necessary to protect the health of the mother. The legislation defined a fetus as a person, & could have criminalized virtually all abortion.

Since a woman's health is part of Roe v. Wade, I'd actually characterize Obama as a very careful protector of that ruling.

From “OnTheIssues.org”:

Look, Obama is the most extreme on this issue. Look at his Senate vote. He was one of the very few even in his own party to vote against the bill restricting partial birth abortion. Now, wanting to look more moderate on the issue, he's slightly tweaking his position? I'm not buying it, Senator. For all of his flipping, Senator McCain has been staunchly pro-life when it comes to opposing abortion.
