Jazz, thanks for the post. I agree that the US history we are taught is sanitized and the motivations of the FF not understood. Unfortunately this lack of understanding of our history and country cause many people in America vote in ways that are not in keeping with the FFs' vision.

Wayne from Jeremiah Films introduces the difficulty of teaching history honestly.

Some groups tend to confuse history with nationalism and values (whichever they are) as ideals with particular behaviors and beliefs. .The FF were at odds with one another and had bitter debates about what were to be the primary values of this new nation.
If the FF were to find themselves in today's America, it's likely they would have another great debate and arrive at another compromise . We can hope for another compomise, but the debate is certain.

Complexity has to be introduced according to age level, but I believe that an honest hsitory, warts and all together with achievements is the best way to teach progress up to the current day and the progress still needed.

I think children should not even be taught history until they are old enough to be taught the realities of it, or at least something closer than what they get in elementary school. Why not stick to the foundational skills of reading and math for the first couple of years and start out with geography so before you are teaching them the history of a place they understand where it is?

Linked to your post from the July 4th values post at Jeremiah Films Christain Conservatives adopt statement of common values, Unify behind McCain What is very sad about the current education in California today is they really do not teach much of the history of the reason we exist as a country; children today in high school can not tell you much about any of the founders, let alone why they may have been moved to rebellion: but that is a topic for another post.
