I tend to agree with Clark on this one - a non-leadership role in the military is not really applicable experience to being the President. I don't understand why everyone is making such a big deal out of this comment. He didn't impugn McCain's service or imply in any way that military service is inconsequential or unimportant. All he said was that in his oppinion, being a POW doesn't make McCain more qualified for the job.
I also agree. If McCain truly thought being a decorated veteran is what it takes to be president, he should have supported Kerry over Bush. Also lost in the sound-bite outrage is the fact that Clark was asked the question and answered it using the same words as posed in the question. How would you answer the question? Is getting shot down and imprisoned a valid qualification for the ultimate executive position? What specific presidential skills does that impart? Would we hire a CEO based on that qualification?

thats the question Ive often asked about Obama. Does his resume make him presidential material. I guess it does. So if Obama can be a president based upon selling beer licenses in Chicago then I guess McCain can be president based upon being a POW.

McCain has said the same thing himself repeatedly. Getting shot down is nothing to be particularly proud of, and it certainly doesn't qualify you for the presidency. And of course, it's certainly nothing to be ashamed of either. His actions after his capture have notable bearing on his character. Specifically in Sen. McCain's case, his refusal to accept early release for propaganda purposes from his captors. And I'm absolutely certain Clark would be among the first to acknowledge that.
This silly "gotcha" is just more evidence of how poor a job our former news media does. Or, I guess you could say it's our newly-minted entertainment media doing a great job of driving website hits, Neilsen Ratings, and newstand buys.
