The entire west is in severe drought. Warm winters combined with drought have created a blight of disease that kills trees and makes them more flammable. The fires will get worse. Far worse. If you conservatives see a way to remove all the dead trees and preserve your precious tax cuts, propose away. Whether or not the "environmentalists" (and thousands of scientists) are right that carbon and climate change are connected, the drought is real and the West is burning. What a fantasy to think that reducing the numbers of trees on a lot from 50 to 20 would stop these fires in their tracks!

I guess one way to prevent forest fires would be to remove forests. Then gas prices would plummet immediately, never to rise again,

On a sensible level, I do agree that envionmentalists have been too unwilling to compromise, just like developers have been. The clash between expanding human habitation areas and preservation of the environment is occuring all over the world, not just in CA. Birds and fish are dying because they swallow the plastic with which oceans are polluted. We have to re-think how we live, if our progeny are to survive.

But even in CA, deforestation to make room for houses, causes landslides. Are environmenatlists to blame for that, too?

We need cooperation and innovative ways to deal with conflicting needs, not just finger pointing. As the world's population increases and resources decrease, we have to stop and think how to deal with that.
Maybe more of everything is not always the answer.

Amusing how you take the opportunity to toss the blame for high gas prices at the environmentalists in the course of talking about the CA fires. Actually it's more ironic than it is amusing. By all means, remove the fuel for fire when it's necessary, but why use this as an excuse to mischaracterize environmentalists in general? This reminds me of the poll I just read showing how more folks now imagine they can drill their way out of this and prefer that "solution" to conservation. Hey, nobody wants to face the music, better to pass the problem on to the next generation eh? The short view rules! And oh yeah, about the fires? Sure, get rid of the extra fuel, but don't imagine droughts and lightning will ever stop, and don't imagine CA is going to stop having water problems either. Hmmm... maybe we can find a way to blame the environmentalists for those things too?
