So this guy had 72 hours to register though he knew the consequenses for not doing so. I fully agree that we should not categorize statutory rapists with child molesters. That's an issue of terminology and legislation. The immediate solution is for offenders to register as the law states. If you don't like it, stick to 18 + year old girls. And by the way; chain gangs would be great. Learn the law. If you disagree, contact your legislators and advocate for change.

I think the original context is that this guy got tagged with the term Sexual offender- which covers a whole host of things from being in a consensual non age of majority situation to ann out and out predator. What's next, chain gangs?

I have to say that my point was not so much to bash Georgia -- I am hopeful that our court will act reasonably -- as it was to highlight that this is the kind of thing going on in states across the country. Florida, California, Connecticut, Texas all have similar sex offender laws. Other states too. Ours is bad, others are either as bad or getting there. I live here so I pay closer attention, but these laws are in place or being voted in in other states too!

I was born and raised in Georgia (suburbs of Atlanta), and I would have to agree that in a lot of ways, Georgia just keeps setting itself up to look like some draconian relic from the antebellum days, and reinforcing those stereotypical notions of the South as a hellhole. We have only the politicians (and ourselves, really) to blame.

exactly. He'd get better accomodations and habeas corpus if he was an enemy combatant in Gitmo. He would have been better off shooting someone.

Georgia, not surprised. Ass backwards, can't even think up a decent street name in Atlanta. I have friends in Ga. I keep telling them to move.
