To echo tomsj, you can often also tell someone's political/social view about homosexuality by how often they use “homosexual” and “gay” as nouns versus adjectives. I used to listen to G. Gordon Liddy a fair bit (just as an example) and he was always talking about “the homosexuals.” Most more moderate and liberal people typically say “homosexual men and women” or more commonly “gay men and women.” The idea is clear. Homosexuals are a different sort of thing for many social conservatives. For social liberals (for lack of better terms for all this), gay men and women are men and women who happen to be gay.

Just compare the two sentences: “John is a homosexual” and “John is homosexual.” While the second sentences is less common than “John is gay,” the more conservative person is more liable to use the former and the more liberal the latter.

To answer your question, yes, “homosexual” is considered the pejorative and clinical term from when being gay was thought to be a mental illness. If you specify homosexual in the Google news feeds, you come up with all the religious fanatics. If specify gay, you come up with the more moderate and accurate news items.
