The crowd of souls, already fanning themselves in the heat of the day, gathered all around the capital flagpole, cheering USA USA USA and singing as the flag came down low, a pop tune da da da da, da da da da, oh ay, Goodbye…da da da da, da da da da, oh ay, Goodbye.
Honor guard, black and white, handles the confederate flag with trained military respect, and once flag was down and rolled, not triangle folded, a black officer carried it and gave it to a heavyset old man who is head of a confederate museum–with respect, and the old man was escorted out of the square with a black officer walking at his flank.
No doubt we’ll hear all manner of this and also that, in days coming. Some vicious but some voices just saying good things that are not devisive or cruel.
But the best quote so far was overheard in the PEACEFUL crowd cheering the take down of a flag that was a source of pride long ago during a war that old men riled and sent young men to die… but is now also associated with a dark past and present.
The quote from a peaceful participant at the take down of the confederate flag:
“This is how we riot in South Carolina.”
South Carolina, what a way to go. May you and your people be blessed in every good way.
