Divine Intervention for Obama: Hindu Style

Oy. As if Senator Obama’s team doesn’t already have a full time job swatting down rumors that he’s a double secret Muslim, over in India the Hindus are trying to help out Obama’s campaign. They are doing so by praying for him and sending a gift half way around the world.

NEW DELHI: Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama can now expect help from an unexpected quarter — Lord Hanuman.

All-India Congress Committee member Brij Mohan Bhama has organised a 11-day religious ceremony at Karol Bagh here for his success in the U.S. elections.

The idea of sending an idol of Hanuman dawned on him after friends in the United States mentioned a “prominent American politician who carried a miniature Hanuman idol in his pocket for luck,” Mr. Bhama said speaking on the first day of the ceremony on Tuesday.

The idol in question is 21 inches long, weighs 15 kilograms (more than thirty pounds) and is made of gold plated brass. The statue will go through an eleven day series of ceremonies and isolation in a temple before being sent to Obama in time for the Democratic Convention.

It’s a nice touch – a thoughtful gift and it seems to come from a genuine desire for Obama to do well. However, it may just be a wee bit naive in terms of political reality. I simply can’t wait to see what the Right wing pundits will make of this when it arrives.

The Christian right-wing will just freak over Obama's idol.

Even if the Pope himself was to bless Obama the rightwing would find a way to make an issue of it and try to paint Obama as evil.
What is the more interesting story here is how the people in different parts of the world are so involved in this election and trying to do whatever they can to help Obama.
I've heard of European groups trying to do phone banking to tell people to support Obama. They have a list of rules and what to expect from the Americans they call and how to respond in different situations.
The story is the how the rest of the world is praying and hoping we elect Obama and this is part of what is spurring the intense interest in this election from the world.
It is simply fascinating to watch the way the world is reacting.
What will be even more interesting is election night if Obama wins. What will the world do when word reaches other countries.

A friend of mine, whom I met on my business trip to Japan last summer, told me the following with dead seriousness a few days ago (posted from his e-mail):

For Americans to elect a man as President who's ancestors were slaves just 150 years ago speaks volumes to the greatness of your country. You'll never see a Chinese person elected prime minister of Japan. NEVER!

Once again, when you have “firsts” of this magnitude, everyone watches. Senator Obama is looked as the Great Affirmer of American Greatness and Diversity in the world. And his election to the presidency may, I emphasize MAY, open lines of communication unparalleled in our nation's history. But Americans have to vote for either Obama or McCain. Regardless of the world's viewpoint, we hold the final say. And I'll respect either Obama's or McCain's presidency.

  4. Well, I think they'll find it hard to go on the “he's a terrorist sympathizer” strain with this one, so I guess they'll have to get really creative.

I've got it: “They think he's a god, and that's heresy, because there is only one God. This is proof that Obama is the AntiChrist!!!”

Although, that one may be reach just a little bit.

Dymero, some people might be surprised at how far the fundamentalist right-wing so-called “Christians” will reach, but I'm not (Pat Robertson condemning Dover, PA, et al.).

  6. outsource says:

Right wingers: Jesus Christ was the son of the Devil. Christianity is an inferior religion.

Lord Hanuman is the one true God of mankind.

Convert to Hinduism and your soul will be saved.
