On the radio today, CERN LHC debate & Liz Mair of RNC

01aradio.pngToday on Mid Stream Radio, (1:00 PM eastern, 10:00 AM pacific) we’re scheduled to interview prominent astrophysicist author and educator Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson. (At the time of this writing, Dr. Tyson’s assistant is working through some scheduling issues, but we still hope to pull this together today.) Either way, during the first half hour we’ll be covering some of the base information regarding the CERN Large Hadron Collider and whether or not the experiment will create a black hole that could destroy the planet. (See our previous coverage for background: Part one, Part Two and Part Three.) And just to give you something to look forward to, we have now scheduled an interview for tomorrow’s show with Dr. Robert Wagner who will be calling in from Hawaii. Dr. Wagner is one of the scientists working to halt the LHC experiements until more of the safety issues can be addressed.

In the second half of the show, we’ll be joined by Liz Mair of the Republican National Committee who will bring us up to date on the state of the campaign as the two parties move forward toward their national conventions. We’ll ask her about Obama’s public fundraising moves, her upcoming Twitter debate with a representative of the Democrats and any other topics which come to mind.

By following the link at the top of this entry you can listen in to the show and also call in to (646) 595-3963 if you have any questions or comments for the guests. You can also participate in the always lively web chat which accompanies the show and submit questions for us there. (In order to chat, you’ll need to stop in to the BTR homepage first, complete a fast, free registration and grab a nickname for the web chats.)

See you on the radio!

That is a hilarious juxtaposition of interviews. I'm more worried about the campaign season creating a black hole than CERN.
  • Hey, you schedule the guests when you can get them. :-)

CERN judging their own LHC is safe is like a drunk deciding he's all right to drive... with 6,700,000,000 passengers.
Who cares about a Higgs Boson particle or some quark gluon soup except a handful of frustrated geeks who have run out of ideas and have to experiment with forces they don't even understand. These freaking physicists waste money and energy time and time again building atom smasher after atom smasher and end up with more questions, not answers. Now they've built one so powerful they say themselves it will create mini black holes at the rate of one per second! Which would change your life more; knowing they found some particle or getting crushed and sucked into a black hole along with everyone and every thing you ever cared about?
That sound like a good risk vs. benefit to you?!? Just because you can't wrap your mind around it does not mean it can't happen.

The scientists involved in the LHC experiment have admitted to not knowing what the results will be - whether they will find the Higgs bosons that they are looking for.

Correct me if I'm wrong - RESULTS is only half the synonym of the word OUTCOME. The other half is CONSEQUENCES.

If they are unsure of the results, how can they claim anything regarding consequences.

The truth is-- they don't know what the OUTCOME will be - the results and CONSEQUENCES.

The truth is - scientific experiments can and have gone wrong in the past. That is why we use guinea pigs.

But in the LHC experiment the guinea pig is not a lab mouse. It's the planet Earth.

Claiming that they can "control" it is beyond comprehension to me - when they DON'T KNOW THE OUTCOME.

They say the ODDS are like winning the lotto. Well every week a lotto winner (sometimes "winners") are announced.

And the "odds" can only be talked about if you base it on specific numerical permutations/and probabilities -- how can they when THEY DON'T KNOW?

World War I and World War II evidenced the human race's capacity in slipping into the rabbit hole of collective madness.

There may be no World War III, but the LHC experiment will do.

Remember lone and persecuted Galileo against ALL the other scientists/astronomers?
