Russert definitely left huge shoes to fill, but I think this article and these comments are good in that they don't talk about trying to maintain the Russert brand, but rather building another, different brand, that can hopefully complement the Meet The Press brand much as Russert's did.
Dr. Tantillo ('the marketing doctor') just did a post on this subject: "In short, NBC has to think Meet The Press brand first and possible contenders for the host job second."
Here's a link to his full post: http://blog.marketingdoctor.tv/2008/06/17/brand...

Chuck Todd has the mental capacity, a tremendous analytical ability and the preparedness. Mitchell is bright but, wouldn't have the popular appeal of Russert, Matthews, while sharp, is too full of himself and talks over all his guests. Scarborough is an interesting choice-- I admit that I have been struck by his ability to take a nonpartisan stance while interviewing guests. Olbermann is too obviously progressive.

All in all, Tim Russert left huge shoes to fill.

Mitchell, Matthews, or Scarborough would all all be good choices. My preference would be Mitchell.

Mitchell and Scarborough have both the gravitas and centrist take, and Chuck Todd is the most intriguing, though he won't get the job, as his foreign policy chops aren't evident. Gregory would be an outside choice.

Matthews is a has-been. Olberman is a never-will-be. Williams doesn't have the gravitas, and is not as highly-regarded as this post makes it appear.
