Dr. E.
Thanks for your reply.
You understood that i was asking about how bloggers see the overall relationship, not just the specifics of the current uproar.

dear runasim, some are outraged, but most of us here at TMV are trying to understand the situation, to sort the poppyseeds from the dirt as my grandmother used to say (reference to old fairy tale). Background about this one particular incident is why I ran Mr. Cox's article. Much across the blogosphere leaves out the back and forth between AP and the Drudge ReTort.

I think many of us at TMV are sympathetic to AP writers, I certainly am... even though recently, some very few at AP have been charged with getting facts wrong in printed article... about one of the candidates for president at the Libertarian convention, is one I've heard recently. However, small and tiny erratas can become 'a way of life' when dealing with fast writing and fast news cycles which are no longer 24/7, but literally minute to minute.

Joe and I and others atTMV have mentioned many times, and also in the past week, how the tributaries work between msm and the blogosphere, so yes, you are accurate runasim. It is a symbiosis.

One of the issues about paying for factual info that is freely availible elswhere, besides AP, is that most bloggers work for no pay; they have no budget.

A good deal of what the contretemps is about CURRENTLY, is the wholesale taking of entire articles, without attribution, without linking back et al.

That linking back, attributing, and taking only a part and giving the link to the rest ...is what draws advertisers et al to AP's website. Apparently, that has been one of the things missing in this case as I understand it.

The issue of fair use was purposely written loosely in copyright law. One of my legal sources pointed out this week, that to tighten it down with bright lines, would tie up the courts and authors and news corps ad infinitum. I agree.

And I heard that you are asking for more background on AP, and more on how bloggers feel about the reciprocal possibilities. I believe we have stated that many times at TMV, but certainly will put your thought out to my cobloggers.

Thank you runasim, always.

dr.e

dear craig_r: you're correct, the link you provide has much missing background, and much missing material about the genesis of various media groups, and their behind the scenes friendships or animus toward whomever, but thank you. I htink 'fair use' is already defined by the digital copyright law. We shall see. I put up Mr. Cox's article because it gives good factual background about the written legals on the situation with the Drudge ReTort so that people can see the underside of the situ. Thanks for your comment and come back again.

dr.e

We've been reading post after post about the evil ways of the AP. and I certainly understand why bloggers would advocate for their point of view.

It would be nice, if more reporting on the bakcground would be sprinkled iin with the outrage. For example: when past cases were settled, what were AP's arguments? What were AP's concesions?
Do bloggers recognize any legitimate concerns on the part of the AP? If so, what are they?

On the other side, do bloggers recognize how dependent they are on news soures for the content of blogs and their careers as bloggers"?
Are they concerned that if the sources dry up for lack of funding, their blog posts would also dry up?

To make it clear, I'm not criticizing bloggers in their fight with the AP.
I am a little frusntrated, however, that after so many posts, a non-blogger like I still has read next to nothing about the broader perspective bloggers have regarding their need for news sources and their role in preserving same, if any.

You might want to take a look at the discussion in re the MBA that is going on over at "Making Light."

It presents some interesting views -- from (mis)perceptions about the press accreditation process for bloggers to the (mis)perception that the AP may think it's putting in a "deal" with bloggers in general about how they (AP) can decide what is "fair use" or not.

See http://nielsenhayden.com/makinglight/archives/0...
