Beware of Republican Suggestions for the Democratic Ticket

My much more politically savvy TMV co-contributors are doing a great job of reporting on and analyzing the amazing–yes, historical–events of this unbelievable day and night in American politics.

I will thus refrain from making any in-depth, or even semi-in-depth, comments about it. With one exception, and I am sure that even this perhaps shallow observation has not gone unnoticed to Democrats.

It occurs to me how hard Conservative/Republican commentators, talk-show hosts, pundits, politicians, etc., have been working to ensure that Hillary Clinton–the same Hillary that they love to hate– would become the Democratic presidential candidate.

Could it be that Republicans are mortally afraid of an Obama candidacy?

Now that those hopes for Hillary to be the candidate seem to have been dashed, I notice how hard the right-wing media are suddenly pushing for Hillary–the same Hillary on whom they think they have a ton of “dirt” –to become the Democratic vice-presidential candidate.

Could it be that they think that this would be the “next best thing” in their attempt to doom the Democratic ticket?

Perhaps. But, in my heart of hearts I believe that even an Obama-Hillary ticket, or especially an Obama-Hillary ticket will handily beat a McCain-Bush ticket.

I've also wondered why the GOP has been pushing so hard to make Hillary the candidate. I see three possibilities:

    - They just want to split the Dem vote
    - They do (did) want to see her on the ticket because they do have "dirt"
    - They want her on the ticket because they believe McCain can beat her fair-and-square
