Waxman Demanding FBI White House Interviews

(Via Memeorandum.) A report from ThinkProgress indicates that Congressman Henry Waxman (D – Calif 110) in his position as chairman of the Congressional Committee on Oversight and Government Reform has issued a letter to Atty. General Mukasey requesting that he turn over transcripts of interviews conducted by the FBI with President Bush and Vice President Cheney. The interviews were conducted as part of the investigation regarding Scooter Libby and and Valerie Plame.

New revelations by former White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan raise additional questions about the actions of the President and the Vice President. Mr. McClellan has stated that “[t]he President and Vice President directed me to go out there and exonerate Scooter Libby.” He has also asserted that “the top White House officials who knew the truth — including Rove, Libby, and possibly Vice President Cheney — allowed me, even encouraged me, to repeat a lie.” It would be a major breach of trust if the Vice President personally directed Mr. McClellan to mislead the public.

At this late stage, it’s rather hard to tell how much of this is a new, valid line of investigation into the Plame case or how much might be political theater in a very high profile election year. Further, given the lack of luck most Democrats have enjoyed in getting the White House to release anything they don’t want to, the productivity of such a move is in question. In any event, we’ll stay on top of this story, as the White House response (in whatever form it takes) is likely to be more informative than the ongoing investigation.

The cynic in me says it's political theater for November. I however, would really like to know how involved everyone at the WH was in the Plame case.

I would like to know too, Rambie. I always believed that the VP was behind the whole thing, and that Fitz should have put him under oath for his Grand Jury testimony. Libby threw himself on his sword, but might have talked eventually when his jail time approached, which explains the commutation of his sentence by Bush.

I always wondered if Fitz was ordered to back off of Rove by AG Gonzales. Everyone in the media was predicting his indictment.

McClellan doesn't know that much, however-- they'd have to get Rove to talk.

I don't think it's political theater for Nov. This is one scandal (I think) that McCain has no part in. Obama's refrain on McCain is painting McCain as someone who supoprts Bush's failed policies. I don't see how the Plame/Wilson scandal can advance the Dem cause.

Furthermore, the scandal seems to only involve Bush administration folks, not elected congressman/women. I think if the Dems wanted political theater for Nov. then they would focus on other scandals that could gain them something. I don't think the Plame/Wilson would credibly advance the cause of "all Republicans are the same". Particularly if Obama wants to be bipartisan.

I posted a comment or two in the last couple of days about the schism between Obama's goals and the goals of the Dem. Congress. It will be one of Obama's challenges for Obama to bring the Dems into line and pursue his agenda. If the House Dems are approaching this scandal as a way of grouping all Republicans together and political theater, then this is a perfect example of congress's goals being at odds with Obama's (which would only hurt the Dem Party).

As much as I don't like the GOP falling into line behind virtually every single action the Bush administration did, there is nonetheless a time for party unity, which the GOP does hands down better than the Dems, and a time to speak up, which has been missing from the Republican leaders under Bush.

I support the Plame/Wilson investigation to find out what happened, but I do not support it as "payback" in general to the GOP.
