Taegan Goddard published a (very) short summary of the political year 2006 at the Political Wire.
It was a year of great power shifts. Democrats reversed 12 years of Republican dominance on Capitol Hill as they took control of the House and Senate in the midterm elections. Sen. George Allen was the insider’s front runner for 2008 and then became the first political victim of the YouTube era. Super lobbyist Jack Ambramoff went from the king of K Street to prisoner. And Rep. Tom DeLay went from House Majority Leader to become yet another blogger.
It was also a year of great political comebacks. In OH-6, Charlie Wilson couldn’t get on the ballot and then won a remarkable write-in campaign. In Connecticut, Sen. Joe Lieberman lost a primary challenge to Ned Lamont and then crushed him in the general election. And California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R) came back from the near dead, winning re-election in a landslide.
There is more, so read the whole thing.
Much more worthy of mentioning happened, of course. For instance Iran’s nuclear program, the mess in Iraq, the ISG report, the adventures of Kim Jong-Il, the Ayaan Hirsi Ali controversy, the Dutch cabinet that fell, word came out that Blair will resign in 07, Merkel’s victory in Germany, Cartoongate, etc…etc…
2006 has been in a year in which much, very much happened. Both good and bad. Both political and private.
2006 was the year in which I had to undergo surgery which didn’t go as planned. Because my brain fluid leaked, I had to stay in the hospital one week longer. I missed, due to this surgery, much of my classes, which caused me to reconsider my life, my future, in short, my plans. When this year began I studied law, now that this year has almost ended I’m studying American Studies, which truly is incredibly fascinating.
In January 2006 I created my own blog Liberty and Justice. In May of this year, Joe asked me to co-blog at The Moderate Voice: I gladly accepted. Later (after quitting my own blog due to lack of time) he made me assistant editor, which is a great honor. As Joe has announced on numerous occasions by now, 2007 will be the year of changes for The Moderate Voice. These changes will – most likely 😉 – truly be improvements. I’m looking forward to continue to co-blog here at TMV in 2007.
2006 has been the year of love for me, the year in which I started feeling something for someone… something I never felt before, at least not this deeply. In this regard I have been blessed this year, more blessed than I expected or even dared to hope.
2006 has also been the year of challenges and of progress. My political views have developed, as have my personal views.
In short; 2006… makes me look forward to 2007.
How was your year?
