As far as I can make out, McCain is making political speeches, not saying much substantive at all.
As is customary,, the elephant in the speech is 'our antional interests”.which are limitless, while those of other countries are always suspect. That kind of 'do as I say' attittude just doesn't work anymore, as becomes clear should anyone care to look around at what is actually happening.

In the meantime, the US is again conspicuously unwilling to sign the cluster bomb ban agreement. Words can no longer influence the world, when action belies theri sincerity.

Yeah, I agree McCain knows how to talk the talk (just enough to fool people who don't analyze beyond his immediate words). I've posted before that the biggest measure of a politician for me is his (or her) voting record. It really scares me when politicians on the campaign trail suddenly start making statements that make sense, but are positions they never supported in the past.

We all know that the reason most people don't trust most politicians is that a lot of politicians lie. It really subverts democracy when a politician lies about his beliefs to be elected. To make democracy work our representatives (and potential representatives) need to be forthright on their positions so voters can make informed decisions. As it stands now the media, in pursuit of ratings, looks for sensational stories which have little importance on a politician, and many (if not all) candidates buy-in to that mentality to attack their opponents.

This speech of McCain is just political, it's what McCain thinks people want to hear. Not that I think Obama is perfect, but (for like the trillionth time you've read) Obama did make the right call on Iraq in the run up to the war. What is more important to me is that Obama was willing to reflect on the Iraq issue and take an unpopular stand. Not really something many politicians do if they want to be re-elected. But to me it shows that he is not the typical politician and he wants to do what he feels is right for the country (compared to Bush who only wants to do what is right for his big bucks supporters).
