Hillary Clinton: Why Does Her Campaign Endure?

hillary clinton

A good question. Hilary Rosen’s interesting explanation appeared in HuffPost recently. She wrote: “Lately I am asked by lots of friends, including my new colleagues at the HuffPost — who I am so privileged to work with — just what it is about Hillary (Clinton) that makes me stick with her now, knowing that her chances to gain the nomination are slim to nonexistent…

“There are all of the political reasons that keep her campaign going like the popular vote, the polling in swing states, finishing out the primary states before the superdelegates make their judgments, etc. But that doesn’t explain the passion.

“It endures out of, not just the determination of Hillary Clinton to be heard, but of her supporters desire to send a message to this country. A message that I am still not sure has been heard. For all of its historic firsts, this primary race has surprisingly not, until recently, generated a discussion of gender in the same way that it has triggered an education on race…” More here…

Hilary B. Rosen, President of OurChart.com, has been writing regularly on business and politics. Her articles appear in MSNBC.com, The Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, Wired Magazine, Billboard, Business 2.0, Variety, Capitol File and the HuffingtonPost.Com.

I think where Rosen has missed the boat is that she feels nobody is arguing about gender and that that in itself is a bad thing. But, gender has come up frequently during this campaign. Perhaps not as volubly as race did thanks to the whole Wright fiasco, but you can't deny that Clinton has spent a great deal of her campaign running as a Woman Candidate instead of a Candidate. She focuses a great deal of attention on so-called women's issues (child-care, health-care, equal pay, etc.) when in reality, those issues affect everyone and should not be considered important to only half of the country. And as her campaign has hit bumps in the road, Clinton has played the gender card on occasion, claiming sexism and a glass ceiling are keeping her down when the truth is, her genitalia have little bearing on why so many people are opposed to her getting the nomination.

And frankly, I think Rosen is trying to attach a message to the Clinton campaign that just isn't there. Or perhaps it's one that most Americans are just not that interested in discussing. I'm only 26, so I have no memories of women fighting for equal rights and no direct experiences with sexism. Maybe her campaign is falling apart because older women continue to pin this women's rights label on her and are trying to force a discussion with a younger generation that has already moved past the issue.
