At Marginal Revolution, Tyler Cowen wrote about the lack of reading in Brazil. http://www.marginalrevolution.com/marginalrevol...

Maybe one of the reasons that newspapers have declined in the U.S. is that the demogrpahics of the U.S are becoming more like the demographic in Brazil.

Also, newspapers require some cultural references so that stories, editorials, and features mean something. Diversity kills the idea of cultural references.

Of course newspapers have very uniform in supporting open borders, unlimited immigration, social engineering, and the dumbing down of schools. I guess they did not realize that you need customers capable of reading in order to sell newspapers.

[...] Joe Gandelman discusses cuts in the MSM and what it means for the blogosphere: This isn’t just a matter of the decline of a longtime information source. Newspapers still remain the biggest source of fact-based reporting. Most blogs are essentially extended op-ed pages. Online websites are increasing in popularity. But many on-line websites are fueled and linked to content anchored in newspapers and magazine’s. And blogs: how many blogs could exist for ONE DAY without linking to, quoting and discussing something written by a staffer of a newspaper, network or magazine? [...]

I actually think that declining profits in news is a good thing.

Newspaper owners and TV broadcasters have long enjoyed high margins from their news divisions, and the quest for more and more green has coincided in a shift from fact based journalism to more tabloid style stories.

Once the profits mostly dry up, maybe they'll get back to thinking of news as a public service.
