A lot of rank and file Democrats especially in the African American and Hispanic communities oppose gay marriage. Democrats are winning special Congressional elections in unlikely places because they are appealing to socially traditionalist-economic populist voters. The Democratic Party needs to make it clear that pro-family values voters are welcome in the tent - not just the gay and lesbian political activists with their single issue agenda.

I guess there are two questions. 1) Will it influence people who might have voted Democratic this time to vote Republican instead? I could be wrong, but my guess is that the large majority of people who oppose gay marriage in a very strong way were never possible Democratic voters anyway. The question is whether it affects the Obama Republicans, Independents, and Reagan Democrats. I don't know. 2) Will it be a rallying cry for the conservative base who might have been inclined to stay home since they don't particularly like McCain to show up? Maybe more impact here?

Gay marriage has been legal in a few states for years now, and somehow we've avoided the apocalypse. My hope is that most people understand that.

[...] The Moderate Voice - Domestic and international news analysis, irreverent comments, original reporti... wrote an interesting post today on Is Gay Marriage Back As A Republican Campaign â??Wedgeâ?? Issue? Here’s a quick excerpt When California’s Supreme Court decision nixed a voter-approved ban on same-sex marriage the question immediately raised by some talk show radio hosts was: will this be back now as a big campaign 2008 wedge issue? The likely answer: back…yes…….but not quite..because voters have a few teenie-weenie other things on their minds this year. The New York Times has come to the same conclusion: Yesterday’s California Supreme Court decision striking down a voter-approved ban on same-sex marriage reint [...]
