I think that not bombing the Palestinians back into the Stone Age qualifies as a "concession," considering that the Palestinian Authority continues to tolerate rocket attacks from their territory into Israel. If the PA wanted peace to exist between themselves and Israel, a few dozen dead terrorists hung from lamp-posts by their internal security people would make their point - that and sinking the freighters which make scheduled trips to the West Bank to deliver guns to the hardliners. Guys, part of being a government in a politically contentious area is establishing a monopoly on armed force.

The press continues to forget why Israel went into Lebanon in the first place, and why the West Bank continues to be honeycombed with Israeli military presence - because on their best day, the Palestinian Authority are thugs and goons in nice suits.

I have to echo the pessimistic statements. I was listening to interviews with Israelis and Palestinians today and they were speaking of those who have given up on the idea of two states and seek to create one state, ruled by secular democratic principles. I don't think the people who support the settlements and their expansion are any more likely to agree to that than allowing the Palestinians to have their own state. I think I've pretty much given up on the idea of peace in the region for at least the next century or so.

It all sounds just peachy.

Thanks for the roundup Jeb. It's nice to know that America isn't alone in dutifully marching to the beat of self-destruction.

I wonder what is the expected response ito the new settlements.
That it would decrease terorism?
That iit would increase support for Israel as the 'righteosd' nation?

Or the opposite?

Within the last year, two of my friend's children- all born in Israel- and their families have begun to consider leaving Israel to live elsewehre. They've lost fiaith in Israel's policies and foresee ever increasing violence in the future. They worry about what the atmosphere is doing to their young children.

That's very disturbing,,
