Actually, from now on, we can use the phrase "protecting marriage" to mean protecting marriage equality. In November, bigots in California will be trying to change the definition or marriage through lies, slander and bullying. Fight to preserve marriage as the Court has *recognized* it, not defined it. The definition of marriage has not changed, only the participants are no longer being excluded for quaint religious reasons. Don't let bigots decide for everyone who can and who cannot be married. Don't let bigots force this country's most populous state to oppress a minority of its citizens. In this sense, we must protect marriage from being coopted by narrowminded throwbacks to the dark ages.

I'm all for the separation of church and state- let the state confer any legal benefits (tax, hospital visitations, work place benefits, etc.) on anyone (straight or gay) who want to marry. Let the couple's church marry them to recognize the spiritual/religious aspect.

We're actually closer to that religious/state separation than most people think.... Right now couples need to go down to CIty Hall (or some other government place) to be legally recognized. Some couples just stop at the civil union. But the icing on the cake is the traditional church marriage. Obviously if a same sex couple's church doesn't recognize same sex marriage then that church would not perform the religious ceremony. If people have a problem with their church, then they are free to worship somewhere else. Though it is probably difficult to find inclusive churches in Jesusland. :)

So many in the religious right not only want the state to discriminate against same sex couples, but those same people want all religions to discriminate against same-sex marriage. I don't see those religious people saying that same-sex marriage would be ok in other religions....

SteveK.

The one man, one woman referendum is not my idea, and it's the opposite of what I believe.

it is what the opposition trotted to TV stations, however, the moment the court decision was announced. Since they've had success passing such referendums in other states, this does cause some concern.

If anyone knows what they're talking about on this subject, it would be Mildred Loving. If we ever manage to transcend this backward period, future historians will look back and marvel at how so many people were willing to embrace superstition and intolerance over reason and inclusion.
