That said, any good look around with both eyes open shows that our views toward other species and entire ecosystems (meaning forests, prairies, wetlands, and even oceans) suffer more from a dearth of respect and understanding than from an overabundance of respect. Also there is much temptation to comment on "the dictates of God" and "Judeo-Christian doctrine" in this context, since it seems to me the role those influences have played when it comes to plundering the garden of Eden have come down on the irresponsible side, but I'll leave it at that. And as much as the idea of plants having "rights" comes across as hairbrained, we know there many species of plants which are already protected. I mean we all like the idea of preserving ancient Sequoias right? In any case, my wandering from the orginal point was done with the knowledge that stories like these tend to be used by some folks to justify wandering in the opposite direction, so this was only intended as a shot across that bow.
