It is laughable to hear the left talk about college student drinking. These are the same people who claim that 50 y/o people are not smart enough to sign a mortgage, invest for their retirement, or choose their childrens schools but somehow teenagers are smart enough to make decisions about sex, alcohol, smoking, and drugs.

This issue is in this week's Economist.

It' s not as simplistic as activists (particularly radical leftists and the more childish to infantile among the people claiming to be libertarian) would have people believe. That includes those in the military, subject to great hazards in their work.

Runasim,
It sounds like you are a responsible and effective parent that is doing whatever is possible to guide your kids.

That also may be relevant to why Russia has more problems with alcoholism than Western Europe with it's more evolved social safety nets to help minimize the stress that can lead to substance abuse.

I also think that the 'forbidden fruit' aspect makes getting drunk attractive to many of the young. My husband and I stressed responisble drinking (including practical and specific tips) rather than no drinking, and our children grew up without problems.
I'm leary of making across-the-board conclusions, however.

The obeservation about Europe's relative lack of alcohol related problems is one I've often referred to. I've never been able to reconcile that with Russia's all age alcoholism rates, however.

PS TO PAUL; When you're not a parent, it's easy to ascribe everything to upbringing. For parents, however, it's very difficult to find the right balance in guiding children to make the right choices. You have to compete with the influence of the culture, the peers, the parents of peers. and the natural and healthy desire of the young to beocme persons in their own right, not just their parents' clones.
After parents have done everything right, they still have to resort to just crossing their ifngers in hope.

I am not a parent but I imagine that to a large extent the responsibility of a teenager reflects how they were raised and what examples were set. Isn't it the parents responsibility to teach their kids how to make choices?
