Thanks to you for bringing attention to Annie. I am of the younger generation and when I heard Obama make that reference, I had no idea who he was talking about, but assumed it might by some mythical or fictional female heroine. Reading about the real Annie opened my eyes to a new female role-model, an extraordinary woman by any measure.

The fun thing was when I went to You Tube and found THIS clip. I remember if very vividly watching that production and as a kid in elementary school I even had the original cast album of the show. John Raitt…father of you know who the singer…played the male lead.

The political season can be SO tedius…once in a while it really is fun to find a lighter take on it. Again, lynx thanks for that great you tube link!

LAgal, you seem to have a rather reduced understanding of humor, or more likely you didn't even bother to look at the speech Obama used. Obama was making fun of the fact that Clinton is now pretending she's a gun slinging momma, when she's no such thing. “Acting like she's Annie Oakley”. Obama's not saying that Clinton is like Oakley and that's a bad thing, he's saying that she's no Annie Oakley, no matter what she pretends now.

It's a great song, except that “you can't get a man with a gun” probably holds true for everyone EXCEPT Oakley. According to the wikipedia, she met her future husband by beating him in a sharpshooting contest. She became his assistant, but he realized that she was a better shot than he was and decided to become HER assistant. He died apparently of grief just weeks after she did. You probably don't usually get a man with a gun, but she used a gun and struck gold.

I wonder if the “Annie Oakley” reference would have the negative connotations Obama intended…or unintended, framed HRC — for the demographic who would get the reference — as a plucky admirable character as in the musical?

Regardless…a fine excuse to indulge in some quality culture.

Using Annie Oakley to make fun of Hillary, it shows, AGAIN, Obama's ignorance and not been able to relate to the middle America. Annie Oakley was born in OHIO her parents were from PENNSYLVANIA; she overcame poverty and many hardships. She had determination and strength of character, broke barriers for women, and was compassionate and generous to less fortunate individuals, especially orphans and widows

I don't remember this song at all. I do remember well “Anything You Can Do, I Can Do Better” but that may be because we sang it in high school chorale. I could (and can) sing well but ended up being dropped from the small singing ensembles because I couldn't (and can't) dance.
