What a shame this whole thing is. Of course, the Olympic ideal is that politics play no part, yet in reality politics are central. From the Nazi inauguration of the torch run, Cold War battles fought in track and field or on an ice rink, to the boycotts of Moscow and L.A., and now Tibet protests. What a mess.

Yet I had the pleasure of spectating as the torch passed through Arlington, VA four years ago. There was a party atmosphere up and down the streets that certainly transcended any politics, and I'm sure in most years and in most countries, that is probably the case. So it sure is sad to watch this play out as it has.
