I wonder if you could sum up Powell's UN talk as: he acted as an honorable and loyal military man at a moment in history when that was not what his nation required.

As long as he follows his conscience, and doesn't let others pressure him into foolhardy actions, Americans will respect Powell. I think most people have forgiven him for his speech at the UN that got us into Iraq. Powell may have moved away from the GOP after that disaster.

David I don't think your worries would come to pass. After all, I could easily see Powell endorse while next to Obama announcing he is going to have Hagel be in his cabinet (or whatever the hell terms to be correct since I don't think you're supposed to announce that).

Powell I've felt is a decent man, and not a reactionary neocon. But he is still deep in the GOP and all he can really do is speak well of any Dem nomineed and that should be enough. It would be asking too much for him to support Obama unless he felt McCain's plan to stay in Iraq was so detrimental to the fate of our nation that he would basically vote in a man whose liberal stances other issues run contrary to his own. If he felt that strongly against our being in Iraq he would have already said so.

I think Colin Powell would regain back his credibility and the trust of the American people if he endorsed Obama. He lost it when he helped lie us into this war for the corrupt Bush administration.
