The economy has worsened noticeably since the last election, and even R's know that if that becomes the primary issue most people are concerned about instead of terrorism and national security, they will lose big time. They are already defending more empty seats with less money--and have almost zero chance to regain the majority in Congress.

As far as I'm concerned, its way too little, way too late to be finally questioning the exhorbitant costs of this war. What's even more depressing is the outlook if we DID pull out suddenly ----as another thriving industry ---the defense industry ----would go down the tubes, and we'd have to resort to arming third world countries.

I think the change might also be parttly due to approaching elections.. It's amazing how much the hearing ability of politicians improves around election time. All of a sudden they can make out what the people are saying.

I would prefer to think that both Rs and Ds are becoming more pragmatic, less ideological..
There is a small chance that this thought might actually be true.

They finally starting to realize that an open ended commitment regardless of costs and conditions in Iraq is unpopular among the American people?
