Senator McCain’s Medical Records: Will They Include Psychiatric Records re PTSD?

That’s what some of the pundits are hinting at. But, I wonder what the rules are for releasing one’s medical records if one is running for the presidency; surely it’s not required.

Senator McCain’s had several brushes with cancer; it’s not his age, but perhaps some think it’s his vulnerability to cancer that ought be weighed.

There’s a saying in the old religious stories that when we were born, God put a number on our heads, indicating the number of years we’d have on earth. No one knows their own number. Probably thankfully, many might say.

Yet number of years lived is no perfect predictor of longevity. I’ve seen, and you likely have too, enough clear-headed ninety year olds who lived past ten difficult diseases to still take a dance or ten at every wedding. And you and I have no doubt seen the too many young fall away like snowflakes in a sudden sun, leaving this earth far too soon.

Did Senator McCain have Post-traumatic Stress Syndrome when he returned as a POW from the Viet Nam war? (PTSD is currently called a ‘disorder,’ but I often use the older phrase ’syndrome,’ for post-trauma recovery process is often more like a set of phases one goes through in order to reset the psyche to know the difference between living in war, and living in peace again).

Did Senator McCain suffer from that ‘disorientation to the present’ when he returned and would he care to tell any more details than he already has about that debriefing and readjustment time?

I think it would honor a soldier best to let him say so, or not… as he wishes.

I’d only merit him with this for now: if the answer is yes, he is braver than most will ever realize in putting back together a vase shattered to a thousand pieces but still able, capable and true. And if he did not suffer with post-trauma, he was the luckiest POW on earth.

PTSD is no simple thing, and each person who is hit with it reacts differently. There’s a host of symptoms and thankfully too, a host of helps that last. Too, there’s a truth I know, and not just clinically. I wrote it into Women Who Run With the Wolves in the chapter called “The Scar Clan.” Somewhere along the line, I can faithfully tell each soul I’ve worked with whose been through a horrific set of shocks… just this one simple reality: “Hang in there… scar tissue is stronger than skin.”

And, often, far more prescient …

  • We need to know more about the cancer, and at least one medical writer has opined that McCain's scar really isn't consistent with the uncomplicated surgery he has described. The PTSD issue is quite interesting in light of the legendary McCain temper. Will he be pissed or sharp at 3 a.m?

But the big issue will be danced around, his age and declining faculties. Reporters who covered him in 2000 and again now note changes, in his oratory, the slowing of his speech, and those 'senior moments' such as when he consistently can't keep Sunni, Shia and Al Qaeda straight. He's largely getting a pass from the MSM on these but that won't last.

Young reporters and everyone wishing to be politically correct will talk about his energy, strength, good health. I hear it every day. But as someone about whom such things are also said, I know we all start feeling the slow deterioration. All my older friends joke about it, and though we may not say so publicly, we all know McCain can't be in his best form at 72. Add 4 years of a brutal job and arduous travel schedule in the glare of partisan publicity and it's truly worrying. .

thank you GreenDreams for your always interesting and sharp analyses. I know you read widely. I agree: I saw the med pix of the facial surgery and it was truly extensive and deep; appeared the surgeon was ultra aggressive, which could be the surgeon's style, or only knowing one way of doing things, or could have been much needed.

I teach 2nd and 3rd year residents on occasion and see that personality of the young surgeon often as much as medical judgment influences how/when/where to where they cut.

And just how old are you little brother? My father used to say in his late 80s to not mistake him as 'slipping' but as taking advantage of thinking things through slowly, to arrive at wiser answers. If we have a choice Mr. GD, let's take that one, ok?

You are accurate, and join a groundswell of persons who are concerned about some of the downsides of aging that we know about in our times. More on this at TMV over the next few days....

  • THE FULL MCCAIN

McCain just blew off speaking with thousands of reporters at the upcoming Unity national convention for journalists all the while complaining he's not getting nearly enough news coverage. At last count, it looks to be over 10,000 reporters who were snubbed by Mr. McCain. With all those news reporters losing out on a great opportunity to meet with and write about the man, could it be that mainstream media might be looking for something to report, a story to investigate?

Feel free to forward the following "news tip" to them. We can kill three birds with one stone - take the media to task for not giving us coverage on the full McCain, bring attention to an issue affecting many veterans, and give Senator McCain the level of news coverage he craves.

The media fills us full with stories of McCain's war 'hero' history, writes numerous articles on his status as a POW, informs us each and every time one vet speaks out for him, reminds us endlessly about the torture, even going into great detail about the types of torture and the number of years the man was tortured, yet it never enters the minds of mainstream media to ever ask the obvious question "Could the man running for the highest office in the United States of America, a job with incredible stress, possibly suffer from PTSD"?

Google the general web with the words 'mccain ptsd' and approximately one half million hits will appear. Many of these are articles by veteran groups, most having to do with McCain's lack of support for veterans and others having to do with the very real possibility he suffers from PTSD.

Now go to Google news section and enter 'mccain ptsd'. You might pull up one or two related articles, if you are lucky.

As you can see, there is no real mainstream media resonsibility on this issue. The press is more than willing to talk about the details of McCain's torture but not the probable result of the torture.

“Among U.S. servicemen taken captive during the Korean War, as many as nine out of 10 survivors may suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other mental disorders more than 35 years after their release, psychologist Patricia B. Sutker of the New Orleans Veterans Administration Medical Center and her colleagues report in the January AMERICAN JOURNAL OF PSYCHIATRY.”

McCain has a nine out of ten chance of having PTSD, displays many of the symptoms, yet no one in the mainstream press will question him, a candidate for Commander in Chief who has a history of an out of control temper and refuses to release his military medical records to the general press.

Nine out of ten - Anyone willing to take book on the possibility he does not suffer from ptsd? Call me, I need gas money.

'Post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD, can result from wartime trauma such as suffering wounds or witnessing others being hurt. Symptoms include irritability or outbursts of anger, sleep difficulties, trouble concentrating, extreme vigilance and an exaggerated startle response.'

Before the Iraq war many of us begged the media to fully report on the wmd in Iraq, how it got there, who helped to supply Saddam with it and to report on previous administrations' dealings with Iraq. We were told it was ancient history. The media 'apologized' years later for their failure to fully report the war.

Today, we ask the media to help us answer the question 'Is John McCain emotionally fit for the most stressful job in our country, the President of the United States, our Commander in Chief."

Media has a choice. They can continue to tip toe around the elephant in the room, put a poltician before country, violate the spirit of journalism and ignore ethics that bind them, or they can do their job. They can give us the full McCain.
