The more I learn the less certain I become. History so over simplifies the legacies of our past leaders. Lincoln made far more compromises with evil than many of us would be comfortable in knowing. For years, well into his presidency, he supported returning runaway slaves to their Owners. Nixon and even Reagan would be dismissed as too moderate by today's conservatives..
Lincoln was also a fan of sending slaves (no Emancipation Proclamation yet) back to Africa to form a new colony because the two races could just never make it work. Yeah, it just reminds us how mixed virtually all of our morals and beliefs are.
