I am fascinated by this story…and how the movement of the Olympic torch through country after country…instead of a triumphal passage…has become like Chinese Water Torture for the princelings in Bejing.

The passages through the UK and France have been utter fiascos for the Chinese government, with demonstrators pounding the Tibetan message home.

Like T-Steel, I am sort of conflicted in loving the Olympics and the dream it embodies. Yet that dream is often spun by politicians and even dictators for their own purposes.

We shouldn't ignore the fact…now, as with Jesse Owens in Berlin in 1936…that the Olympic dream transcends passing tyrants…and can be turned against them.

I say let Bush go to the Olympics. Breathing that polluted air will be punishment enough…. And when Bush gets back he still won't do anything to improve the environment. And with all the restrictions the Chinese plan to put into place to reduce air pollution for the games, what Bush will be getting is the best air possible.

I just feel sorry for all the athletes who will be subjected to it (and the Chinese who have to live in it).

I absolutely love the Olympics. Love them to death. And like Senator Obama, I'm conflicted on this one.
