Hillary calls for President Bush to Nix Going to Olympics in China… but he, apparently, is set on going anyway. Given that today he meets with sports figures from a winning team in the US, and last week pitched the baseball at an opener, it would seem it’s easier to get a hearing with the Prez if you were born athletic and winning, than if you were just a gaggle of a few million citizens losing jobs and homes.
I have never quite understood the ceremonial calenders of presidents. I read the recent book on Ronald Regan’s diaries, and it seemed most of every day was not spent in conversation, strategizing, learning, teaching, but in accepting a set of golden teacups from this mogul, and a casque of rubies from that sultan, and with girl scouts and shriners and athlete meetings all in between.
Frankly, forget the tax returns for nominees for election 08. I’d like to see the last five years of Senators Obama, Clinton and McCain’s official and personal calenders. THAT would tell us more than tax returns, ever would
Hillary’s calling on the Prez to quit China, is likely to show up Obama who may have called the war right, but she’ll not be letting him call anything else regarding moral outrage, early.
Calling on the President to cancel his presence at the Olympics also draws a contrast between Senator Clinton and John McCain, who thus far, ain’t saying nuttin’.

In what may be a first time in months I say this: Kudos to Clinton, well, done.
youre a fair heart lynx. iremember the very first time i met you at tmv. your name/ screen name is still beautiful. I remember quoting to you about the sand waves/ lynx, I think it was either G. Brooks poetry. Always nice to see you
I absolutely love the Olympics. Love them to death. And like Senator Obama, I'm conflicted on this one.
I say let Bush go to the Olympics. Breathing that polluted air will be punishment enough….
And when Bush gets back he still won't do anything to improve the environment. And with all the restrictions the Chinese plan to put into place to reduce air pollution for the games, what Bush will be getting is the best air possible.
I just feel sorry for all the athletes who will be subjected to it (and the Chinese who have to live in it).
I am fascinated by this story…and how the movement of the Olympic torch through country after country…instead of a triumphal passage…has become like Chinese Water Torture for the princelings in Bejing.
The passages through the UK and France have been utter fiascos for the Chinese government, with demonstrators pounding the Tibetan message home.
Like T-Steel, I am sort of conflicted in loving the Olympics and the dream it embodies. Yet that dream is often spun by politicians and even dictators for their own purposes.
We shouldn't ignore the fact…now, as with Jesse Owens in Berlin in 1936…that the Olympic dream transcends passing tyrants…and can be turned against them.
