I like the idea of involving the UN. It would make other countries face the realitiees instead of just sitting on the sidelines as critics, and by passing a resolution, or not, assume some of the responsibility.

I don't understand, though, for what the authorization woul be exaxtly:
> for a continued occupation, and if so, would there be a time limit? Would we be or feel obligated to continue on for as long as the authorization holds legally?

>for war, and if so, against whom?

Failing to get UN authorization would certainly bolster those wanting to see an end to the Iraq war, but would the internal arguments be advanced in any way? It seems to me, Iraq would still be the political hot potato it is today, with arguments about "security' and 'national interests' continuing nonstop.

Before going to the UN, it seems to me we should be clear about waht we hope to achieve by doing so, and we should have Plans B,C and D ready for the various possible outcomes.
