They were still taken aback by the show of strength King could produce with with his marches and boycotts.<br>Many whites really only warmed up to him when more militant groups emerged, like the Black Panthers whose guns absolutely scared them. <br><br>Now he has become an icon,. He wanted race to no longer pay a factor in the average black American's pursuit of his/her American Dream and to a large extent it doesn't. It has been replaced by class, which is not good either, but that's another issue.
