Oh, get off of it! I don't allow veiled news sources in 98% of the stories–nor do I tolerate it. There ARE times that it is necessary. You can disagree all you want, but it won't change anything. Nor, will I change you. But, don't think that because you read newspapers you know journalism. (And, yes, I once served as a newspaper ombudsman.)

Your chest-puffing view that what you did is sound because you've been doing
it for 40 years is spoken like a true dinosaur. That is precisely the
attitude that has gotten the print media in so much trouble. Do you allow
your students to use computers or are they required to typewrite?

Shaun--since you aren't one of my students, I'll give you clues easily found in my article. The trapper is from NE Pa. You can go to my website, listed in the article, and find where I live. You can then search the newspaper in the region where I live. Not too hard. But, the purpose of anonumity for the ytrapper and the newspaper is the same as for the animal--no one knows his name. I saw no reason to identify anyone as long as we treat animals as just so much annoyance and garbage. There was a purpose to all of this. Further, by ID the trapper, it allows otehrs to think it applies to only one person. It doesn't. It can apply to ANY person. Anywhere. Anytime. The decision for this is editoprially and journalistically soujnd--and I've been doing this for 40 years.

The lynx has no name — there is no reason to name the politician or the newspaper. I chose not to give them credibility. The names of both are easily available to even the most dense researcher. The greater issue is the story that focuses upon the killing of animals, the role of the media, and of the fashion fur industry. As to link? I don't know what kind of a link you want. This is original reporting.

I think it should be clear what I think of “people” (and I use the term loosely) who think their big old macho men for killing animals, armed with traps and high powered weapons. Try to catch and kill a Lynx naked with your bare hands, and if you even HAVE hands at the end of it, you'll be a big old macho man, otherwise you're a schmuck (the only word I can think of that wouldn't violate the comments policy, and then some).

I agree with Paul – hunting and culling of animals in the wild is necessary to maintain the health of the herds and the animals that prey on them. This however is just flat WRONG!

Culling is one thing; killing for food another, and killing for the joy of it another.
Snaring for the joy of killing is yet another.

My personal worst sport award goes to hunting in fenced in preserves, where the game is fed off-season so they forget to fear humans.

But then, I don't even understand the allure of boxing.

Speaking as a gun hunter who likes to put venison on the table each year, I find the trapping of lynx to be abhorrent. In my mind this is a cowardly,and ignorant pursuit, which shows zero, zip, nada respect for the animal, and by extension, nature in general.

I'd like to know why Gandelman allows a guest blogger who hasn't grown enuf of a pair to name the politico in question. Trapping a lynx or bobcat should be outlawed, but allowing the creep who does it to remain anonymous is cowardly.

I abhor gratuitous killing but appreciate the orderly culling of populations to maintain balance with nature and resources.

The recent efforts to ban horse slaughter for human consumption seemed humane on the surface but will result in many thousands of horses dying of abuse and starvation because it is no longer cost effective to care for them.

Careful what you wish for.
