Putin's overarching foreign policy goal is to block or control the Baku-Ceyhan pipeline through intimidating or overthrowing its Georgian choke-point. And premier/paramount/pivotal to Russian foreign policy is some sort of control over the Ukraine---the main Russian goal since Taras Bulba and the Cossacks succumbed three centuries ago.

GWB ought to strap on a pair after so ridiculously misjudging Putin ["I looked into his eyes....."], but he may be suffering from legacy exhaustion. Don't worry, George, they won't treat you any better if you cave in NATO & Georgia/Ukraine. They will hate you until the day you die. That's their specialty.

Ukraine & Georgia both have fragile democracies---GWB had better put his shoulder to the wheel to make sure they stay democratic.
