Munitions merchants are not what they used to be. A century ago, in “Major Barbara,” George Bernard Shaw gave us Andrew Undershaft, an intellectual who philosophized about war and poverty. Today we have 22-year-old Efraim Diveroli, who peddles useless used weaponry and keeps getting arrested for domestic violence.
After “repeated inquiries” by the New York Times, the Army this week finally suspended his company, AEY inc., from future federal contracts, after learning Diveroli had sold them Chinese ammunition that he claimed to be Hungarian.
The company, which operates out of an unmarked office in Miami Beach with a licensed masseur as Vice President, had supplied $300 million of munitions to Afghanistan’s army and police forces, much of which turned out to be more than 40 years old…
MORE.
Robert, thanks for this post. This war has been tacky in so many ways, and the shabby contractors the USA has given our tax dollars to should be ashamed, or better yet prosecuted! This particular travesty I reported here over a year ago.
The incompetence, corruption and partisanship of this administration once again rear it's privileged head. Where is a sane Republican calling out for new Truman Commission?
True tackiness lies in the fact that is is a back page story.
We are so consumed by picking apart what Hillary said and what the pundits say that important reports like this hardly register. I guess this is how the revered market forces determine what's important and what's not.
I wonder if we're getting the news we deserve or if we've been brainwashed into
accepting that the importance the media place on a report relfects a true value judgment about importance.
An important part of this story is that the contractor is an 8a minority set aside contractor because they are jewish.
I do not find it surprising that liberal apologist would skip over the 8a and the Jewish part of the stories to bash the Bush administration. If the government cannot manage ammunition purposes because minority set asides are more important than performance, think what is going to happen when the government is running healthcare.
LOL – Now SD is blaming teh judes, or is it an end around against the darkies…
Rudi,
Hasidic Jews qualify for 8a minority set aside contracting. If they bid on the contract, the government is forced to give it to them. When Robert was complaining about the incompetence of the Bush Administration he was really complaining about the ability of civil servants (overwhelmingly Democratic voters) to run a minority contracting program that Senator Obama wants to expand.
SD: I love your comments and input on tmv but remember we try to stay clear of calling anyone a liberal apologist, an obama apologist, a clinton apologist and a mccain apologist. And the Jewish angle as you call it can on certain days lead to very angry comments so we try to stay clear of things such as that. The ability of civil servants to run a minority contracting program…that's a valid point and one, in fact, that you could see someone expanding upon in an op ed piece in a newspaper or on a blog post (if they did the research).
