New McCain Campaign Ad: 624787

Via memeorandum comes the first general election ad of the season. America, meet John McCain — war hero, former POW, and patriot extraordinaire:

No doubt we will all know his Navy serial # (624787) by heart before this is all done… and why not? He was a hero indeed; I, for one, admire his service and courage enormously. And he’s gonna need all those laurels to support his position on the Iraq war. (Good luck with that.)

And while he could have run this ad without subtly targeting anyone, he most definitely has singled out Barack Obama as his expected opponent. Evidently he, too, sees the writing on the wall for the Clinton campaign.

So — Obama now knows (rather than simply suspects) the tone and direction of the general election’s early stages. Basically McCain’s line is, “I’m the best candidate because I’m more patriotic than my opponent (… who can only talk the talk”).

I think it’s wasted ammunition against Obama (who, despite some rather flagrant misinformation and spin to the contrary, is plenty patriotic) — but it’s the logical starting point for John McCain, and the strongest ground he can stake by far. Furthermore, as an opening shot, it’s pretty far off Obama’s front bow. In fact, compared to what’s going on in the Democratic primary, I’d say it’s downright gentle.

But that won’t stop some folks from squinting really hard to read between the lines. (People really do need to stop jumping at every shadow…)

Well, MotherJones would find anyone to the right of Che Guevara "creepy".

McCain is defining himself while Obama and HRC are still "defining" each other.

It is a strong ad, focusing on his Power Narrative...plus a record of sacrifice for the country that Obama can't match. I wonder how many videos there are of McCain in the Hanoi Hilton?

Obama's Power Narrative as Racial Uniter has taken damage care of Wright and HRC.

Obama needs the nomination to be over fast, and to focus on McCain. His blogger surrogates will snark and mock McCain's record as best they can in the interim ( The most popular line of attack seems to be his age. As one commenter on another blog said of this video: "Five words: No country for old men!" I can see the Democrats going down in flames in the fall if they start mocking the Senior Vote...can they be that stupid?)

Now McCain might have a 3 month lead in advertising if this lasts till July 1. Amazing.
  • I think McCain's legitimately vulnerable in a number of places, and his age is certainly one of them. But I agree with you, Marlowecan, that it would be unhelpful in the extreme to alienate the seniors this way. Nor is mocking necessary; people know he's old. (and if they don't now, they certainly will via the various talking heads).

And of course, it's fair to question his age. The presidency is demanding and draining, and it ages much younger men appallingly.
  • Well I made a comment here the other day about my 88 year old aunt and because it was in relation to being negative towards Obama my old aunt got slammed by Obama supporters.

Even to Obama supporters if Mother Teresea said something that made Obama look bad they would slap her around and turn her life into a miserable worthless nightmare. It is the extent to which I see the Obama crowd wanting power.
  • Whocares -- All Obama supporters aren't that way, as I'm sure you realize -- anymore than are all Clinton supporters, (and soon, McCain supporters.)

I understand the difficulty in maintaining equilibrium. I've also had trouble with it.... but it's worth separating individuals from the groups because unfortunately, therein lie the roots of prejudicial thinking and polarization.

I agree with Polimom, McCain is vulnerable in plenty of places that one doesn't need to go after him because of his age. Though it is, I think, a legitimate issue- just because of his health. We don't want a president that will conk off after a couple of years. His war injuries don't help, either.

Speaking of war injuries, McCain does have an honorable service record (and John Kerry had an honorable military record, too). He should not be attacked by the Dems the way Repubs. attached Kerry on this.

I think the Dems need to push McCain's support of the Iraq war. Most Americans are not happy with the way the war is going and McCain supports Bush's war strategy. I think the Dems can argue that McCain is a patriotic military man and we are all grateful for his sacrifice (40 years ago), but now is the time for a leader committed to end the Iraq war, which has gone on longer than WWII (for the US) and bring our troops home.

I think that's the strongest argument the Dems can make against McCain- but there are plenty of others.

Come on, buddy. No need to lie.
