Joe said: "One group that will play a MAJOR role in North Carolina: independent voters, since state has an open primary in which Democrats and independents (not GOPers) can vote."

Remember "Operation Chaos"! God, I love that name. You gotta had it to Limbaugh for the name. Like "Get Smart".

I wonder how many InstantDemocrats Limbaugh can drum up? I recall in 2004 ACORN registering Donald Duck and Mickey Mouse to vote (something about crack or meth was involved, I believe...not the Mouse or Duck on drugs...the ACORN worker who was arrested).

If Donald Duck and Mickey Mouse can register to vote (being ACORN, presumably for the Democrats) in the general election, I see no moral reason why noted Republicans from the great state of North Carolina...such as Foghorn Leghorn... cannot vote in the Democratic primary.

I would like so see some young whippersnapper try to stop him: "I say, boy...I say....".

I think the only people who can end the contest early are the superdelegates making a decision now in Obama's favor. It's hard to see massive numbers doing so before NC though.

You are of course absolutely right about Sen. Clinton's legitimate right to continue campaigning, and your implication of the damage that continuation causes to the Party, Obama and down-ticket candidates as a whole is spot on as well.

I believe Sen. Clinton's best choice for all concerned would be to get out now - It would do more than anything else to burnish her image, which has really taken a beating as the contest wears on. Leaving even as she's almost certain to win in PA "for the good of the Party" means she'll remain at the top of the Democratic pecking order for the forseable future. Barring that, the next best thing would be to get out after NC, which she is almost certain to lose.

If she truly intends to fight tooth and nail to the bitter end she will leave a Party in shreds, with downticket candidates losing races that might have gone Dem (Coleman's seat in Minn., for example) and become more despised among rank and file Democrats than Ralph Nader.

But that's just my opinion.
