Honestly there is something to what the guys says about getting some fight training in the gym instead of on the playground. Takes the edge off of so much fake violence they get thru TV and other mediums when they actually train that way. Better in a structured environment than not. And martial training does not detract from schooling by any means. Sports are a necessary part of a good curriculum.

Whether it is dangerous or not, it is sickeningly primitive and reminiscent of the “sports” the Romans were into as they went through their long, sad, decline. We are supposed to be a species making progress in the grand tradition and history of the universe. Retreating to ever more primitive “sports” in which people beat on each other, and kids to boot, is going the wrong direction. Those kids need to be learning English, math, science, and equipping themselves to compete in the 21st century with an ever more competitive world, and one which is competing in science, manufacturing and technology, not fisticuffs. I suppose if we cannot compete for real creative work anymore we can always make money letting people watch our kids beat themselves senseless.

If you think MMA is dangerous, than compare the list of injuries from UFC events with those of the NFL, NBA, NHL, MLB and Boxing. You will find that the “mainstream” sports have far higher injury rates. MMA is not what is was in the beginning. Try watching it sometime, you might just learn something.
