I have wondered also, how MLK and his movement would have fared in today's world of poisonous blogging and 'gotcha' politics. It was bad enough as it was, but my guess is that given today's circumstances, the violence would have been much, much worse. How would FOX News have covered the marches, and what would have been the response on the streets?

I note wiht sadness, almost despair, how every new technological advance is hailed as a promise and devolves into a disappointment. . TV was supposed to acvance information and education, but it became entertainment for dummies. The Internet is as much the dispenser of hate as of information.

It sure sems like the opportunities provided by what is new lose out to the exploitation of what is new to serve baser instincts.

I have to say, reading those excerpts in the light of present day events and present day sensibilities is an emotional experience. I am truly saddened by the gap between MLK's dream and the reality we now live in. Those who are insulated from these realities, by dint of material comfort or the choice to pretend all is well, will no doubt dismiss my reaction. It's so much easier to look in another direction eh? But that is the same mindset which has allowed people to ignore so many other realities and injustices, including the rounding up of Jews before WWII, the Rwanda genocide, all the way to global warming and all the abuses of present day government, including the controls exerted on it by powerful and rich corporations. But I'm getting offtrack, when I really wanted to say how incredibly moving and relevant Dr. Kings words are - even after all this time. For those who haven't read it yet, this is a good segue from Shaun's piece:
http://obsidianwings.blogs.com/obsidian_wings/2...
