This whole area is filled with short sighted idiots. Palestinians think Hamas is going to fix things instead of always making them worse and Israel is still building in lands that have to be given back if there is to be a peace. I-D-I-O-T-S.

Masorti Foundation for Conservative Judaism in Israel: Joint Emergency Appeal for Ashkelon & Sderot

March 18, 2008

Dear Friend,

Because of the confusion created by any crisis situation, we know you may have received one or more emails or letters about how to help in Ashkelon, Sderot and nearby areas.

We are now jointly writing to tell you that both in Israel and here at home we have gotten our acts together. We are also writing to tell you the need is real and that we need your help.

All contributions for help for Ashkelon and Sderot should be sent in the United States to: Masorti Foundation, Suite 832, 475 Riverside Drive, New York, NY 10015, with a check payable to Masorti Foundation, and in Canada: Canadian Foundation for Masorti Judaism, 1000 Finch Avenue West, #508,Toronto, ON M3J 2V5, Canada, with the check payable to: Canadian Foundation for Masorti Judaism. Either on the check or on a cover note, please specify that the funds are for the emergency appeal.

In Ashkelon, where the Masorti movement has long had a large and active kehilla with a gan (Kindergarten) program involving about 200 children, the immediate need is to reinforce parts of the building, including putting shatter-proof glass on some large windows. This will cost at least $60,000, and possibly more.

In Sderot, Masorti has already arranged more than two dozen day trips to take residents on excursions to Jerusalem, Tel-Aviv or other locations (including two busloads of children to an amusement park). In each instance, in addition to visiting places such as the Israel Museum, Sderot residents were treated to a good restaurant meal. More such trips are planned. Masorti's Marom program for young adults has also sponsored several lectures and films in Sderot and has ongoing program activities there.

Masorti kehillot have additionally welcomed visitors from Sderot either for Shabbat or for programs during the week.

We want to continue these efforts, but we need to know the resources we can commit. Please send in your contributions or pledges, and contact friends as soon as possible.

We really wish this was a letter we did not have to write, but since the help is needed, we are sure we can count on you.

Sincerely,

Rabbi Jerome Epstein
Executive Vice President
United Synagogue of
Conservative Judaism

Rabbi Joel Meyers
Executive Vice President
The Rabbinical Assembly

David H.
