People need to go back and remember their middle eastern sociology. It is acceptble to lie to strangers in the Arab world. One of the things that Americans learn when the work in the Arab world is that they will say yes when they mean no. Why should anyone believe polling data from the Arab world in the first place.

The great weakness of Islamic thought is that (As I recall from this same poll.) they believe that Sharia can be compatible not only with democracy but with freedom of religion. How many of these Muslims are willing to eliminate offenses such as apostasy, blasphemy, insulting the Prophet and other purely religious offenses from the law books of their nations? Can you really have democracy without freedom of speech?

" but because you can find 7% of people to believe anything" Last number I saw was still 41% of Americans believe Saddam was the one who ordered the 9/11 attack.

The fact that there is only a small minority (7%) of muslims who support 9/11 and terrorism is great news. I'll bet you can find more than 7% of Israelis who believe the arabs should be transfered or killed. I believe more than 7% of the South African Christian population felt that Blacks were no more valuable than domesticated animals. Let us not look too far in the distant past to see what our French Catholic brothers believed about the Algerians. By whatever G-d's the Hutus called in their name sure did a number on the Tutsi in RwandaI. if you look at the terror heaped upon the rest of Europe and Russia by our Christian Germans, 9/11 doesn't seem so monumental.

Terror, hatred, murder are unfortunately human conditions - not just muslim.

I think you could find 7% of Americans think the September 11th attacks were justified. Not because Americans are all immoderate terrorists, but because you can find 7% of people to believe anything.

Yes but those criminals are caught, not hidden by nations that give them support. They don't flee into christian backwaters and hidden by the church despite our best efforts to catch them. Go ahead, change the name mulsim to chrisitan. If you told me 7% of Americans approved of the Oklahoma City bombing I'd be equally shocked. That would indicate a shocking number of those who maybe don't overtly agree but still find sypathy with the extreme views represented by those american terrorists.

Our country persues abortion killing doctors with a vengence. Arab nations do not do so with terrorists.

slamfu - What if we change radical Muslim with radical Christian. It only takes a radical few to bomb the Atlanta Olympics or murder abortionists in Buffalo.

"Unfortunately, some papers have tried to manipulate the findings with headlines like, “Seven percent of Muslims condoned 9/11 attacks: poll. Obviously, that’s not the point.”"

Thats not the point? The hell it isn't. 7% to me is a staggering number of people who supported the worst terrorist attack on record. That you could find one in a hunderd would have surprised me and been a disturbing sign. What if you lowered the bar some what would you find then? I'm sorry but this study shows me the exact opposite of what you concluded.

Whats more important would be a poll of the imams and spiritual leaders in the middle east and what percentages they fall into. What do they think because they are the ones pulling the strings over there. You telling me its just a 7% of the folks that burn embassies when cartoons of the prophet are shown in Denmark or try to execute a teacher for naming a bear after him? When South Park can run an image of Muhammed without knowing for a fact that people are going to die as a result, I'll buy into this most muslims are moderates message. Not until then.

This might seem to validate the unique opportunity of someone who looks and sounds like Obama reaching out to Muslim communities around the world. We need much more carrot relative to stick.
