People in the Palestinian Territories have held a number of demonstrations against President Obama’s visit today. For Al-Hayat Al-Jadidah in the Territories, columnist Bahaa Rahhal explains why they have good reason to be disappointed with Barack Obama, who from their point of view sides with Israel no matter what insult or act of violence Israelis commit against Palestinians.
For Al-Hayat Al-Jadidah, Bahaa Rahhal writes in part:
They protest to express not only their right to oppose the visit, but to oppose all positions of the United States, which invariably provide cover for the occupation, and with its continuous financial, military and political support, provides it with every tool for murder. And in return, we, the victims, are whipped.
We haven’t forgotten the position taken by the United States opposing the state of Palestine during voting at the United Nations. We have witnessed the pressure and blackmail that takes place – and continues to take place – against us or anyone who supports our cause, whether it be economic or political. That is the position of the United States, which sides with the occupation, and whose president is coming here empty handed, without any political initiatives and without any results. He won’t even put a wreath of flowers on the tomb of Yasser Arafat. Can this, in any sense of the word, be considered de-facto U.S. recognition of the state of Palestine?
